@mrbee: the part where the anchor woman assures the children Santa is white she clarifies "the real Santa"...too good not to include in thread title.

We had black and white Santa Clause in my house. This lady is a moron, I guess she never learned that "Santa" isn't real.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: The modern day Santa Claus is white, but pretty sure the OG Claus wasn't.
Just googled a bit on Christ, and thought this was a really interesting interview on Christ being white or not:

Sigh. Megyn Kelly doesn't get the point of the original article (surprise, surprise). What bothers me the most is that she feels like she HAS to tell all the kids out out there that Santa is white. Why does it matter that much to her?

Sigh. Really?
Also this sentence - "Jesus was a white man, too. It's like we have, he's a historical figure. That's a verifiable fact, as is Santa. I just want kids to know that."
I can't even.

@mrbee: Lol that is what I was thinking.
This is beyond stupid. I really could not care less what colour skin the mall Santa has, and I definitely don't stress myself over the skin colour of the "real" Santa. Santa is an imaginary figure, so by definition his appearance is up to your imagination.
Also, I think it's very debatable whether or not Jesus was white. Given where He was from, He probably was not white actually. That said, I don't care if people like to think of His appearance as being white, or black or whatever else. It's kind of missing the point to worry about that.
I think this lady is upset at the idea of changing the image of Santa she grew up with. To her, he is and always will be white and anything else just feels wrong to her.

The first time I was taken to see a black Santa for pictures I cried and wouldn't sit on his lap. I kept saying he isn't real. I totally embarassed my grandmother. I think my outburst spurred my mom's black Santa figurine collection. Now, I feel a little bummed (and excluded) when I get my mainstream catalogs and only white Santa is depicted on the merchandise.
@TemperanceBrennan: like you said Santa's race and ethnicity shouldn't matter.

@Arden: I figured she just didn't want to say Santa wasn't real on tv?

@birdofafeather: Ow mine too. Also what are kids young enough to still believe in Santa doing watching Fox News...
papaya / 10343 posts
My thoughts..
1) It's fox news. Are we surprised?
2) Lady in pink is a f-ing moron. Jesus was white? Um, no. He was an arab. Why on earth would he be the only white dude hanging around the middle east? Why is she so ignorant that she's unaware of this basic fact?
3) Also she is super rude. Last dude is talking and making decent points and she's like "Ok I'm done." Shut your face.
4) Re: white santa-- Santa is based on a real person. Who as a greek guy was probably technically white (although probably a bit more tan than we show him!). But since he is a myth now I could see changing it. I get why he is generally depicted as white in America, as the vast majority of our population is white. But I think it makes sense to make various santas available. Or I sort of like the penguin idea! We already have the easter bunny, why not the Christmas penguin? All sorts of adorable could ensue from that Pixar flick

Just to be clear, Santa Claus's name comes from a misunderstanding of the Dutch Sinterklass, which is Saint Nicholas. Saint Nicholas was born in Lycia, which is modern day Turkey. So he most likely had dark skin, though he probably wasn't black either.
Also, seriously, this type of attitude is repulsive.

Ugh. I just can't with her. I get that she's trying to be cute, telling any children watching Fox News (ooook...) that Santa is real. But she still KNOWS he's a fictional character, so I don't get her apparent need to say, "Hey, kids, don't worry, Santa is real. And he's WHITE. Just FYI. Santa is real and white and that's a fact." Seriously, what is her damage?

@mrbee: That's an interesting take, and I get where he's coming from. But I see a slight issue with it. It seems like he's trying to say she was not necessarily wrong by distinguishing Jesus as a person from Megyn Kelly's own interpretation of Christ. I think that part makes sense. Christians can absolutely have their own imaginings of Christ and not all of them will be the same. But my issue is that she specifically refers to Jesus the "historical figure." To me this indicates that she was, in fact, talking about Jesus the person, the Palestinian-Jew as Reza Aslan says, and not her own personal Christ.

@MrsSCB: just thought it was an interesting interview! Didn't mean to suggest I agreed with the anchor!
pomelo / 5257 posts
@mrbee: Oh I didn't assume you did I was more just thinking through what he was talking about. I think what he had to say was very interesting, but I just don't think it necessarily makes sense for him to apply it in this particular case.

I'm refraining comment on MEGYN but my opinion is Santa is whatever color you see him in. You see white Santa? Great. Black santa? Great. Brown Santa? Great. Santa is not a penguin, though. He's a man.

Loved this part: “And who are you actually talking to? Children who are sophisticated enough to be watching a news channel at 10 o’clock at night, yet innocent enough to still believe Santa Claus is real — yet racist enough to be freaked out if he isn’t white?”

@lovehoneybee: Same! This part also made me lol “the moment white folks saw a black man with a big old bag coming down their chimney, it’d be time to grab a gun and stand your ground.” I just love that show for saying the things I'm thinking in a much more entertaining way
