All of those things you mentioned--plus how you can do everything "right" and still have a picky eater or bad sleeper; why babies do better with a schedule/routine; why it's not always easy to get a babysitter; and so on!

Ha, that was probably me before baby with all the questions, but I would still never expect my host/hostess to arrange all my meals! I would be appalled and feel so bad and offer to buy take out.

@Anagram: hmm I wish more parents would get that first one!

That sometimes wiping a toddler's nose requires a full body lock. I saw a woman at the doctor's office wrestling her child to get his nose. She looked up to see if anyone could see/hear his screaming and then just smiled when she saw it was me with two littles!

@autumn865: oh man- my BIL was once talking about how he slept for like 14 hours straight and how he was so overdue for it because he'd been working late that week. I had to bite my tongue so hard, when I hadn't slept through the night once in the past 9 months.

Ugh, even my SIL with two kids (ages 3 and 6) still doesn't "get" why we do things like have a schedule, attempt having an early bedtime, swaddling, white noise... She (and my ILs) think we're too rigid. Nah!

Napping! My sister constantly wants to wake up DD from naps just to play and hold her. Yesterday she started waking her up and I yelled "If you wake her up, I will literally pull your hair out!"

"can't you just give her a bottle?" or "can't you just leave her home?" to do all sorts of things. um, no, it's not that easy. she's 8 weeks old for god's sake!

@MrsHansen82: That bothered me to no end when I didn't have kids is seeing my friends bother other friend's babies while napping.

Napping seems to be a foreign concept to people but I don't understand why.

@Orchid: That's pretty clueless! Does she have NO experience with babies? I feel like I knew all of that before I was out of high school, but then, I babysat a lot.

@tanjowen: That was totally me pre-kid! I used to invite my friends with kids over and thought I was being so awesome telling them that they could have their kids sleep in a pack and play in our room so they could stay longer.

I don't really know a lot of people that don't have kids, but I wish that everyone understood that every kid is different. Just because your kid would sleep in the car doesn't mean mine will. Just because you could just set your baby down in their crib and they would sleep doesn't mean mine would. Just because your baby will eat anywhere doesn't mean mine will. I think we have a more difficult than average baby and I'm constantly faced with people who seem to think I'm exaggerating or something? Like they basically don't believe me until they see her do whatever it is I said she does/doesn't do and then are like oh... I didn't realize it was really like that. YEP. You do you and I"ll do me and lets just all let each other be mmmk?

i saw this thread yesterday and then experienced a moment last night. I went out for my friends birthday and it STARTED at 9:30pm! By 11pm (and with an hour commute to get home), i was ready to leave! One of my friend's friends didn't understand why i had to leave so "early". I explained I have a 2 year old at home (thinking that should be explanation enough) and their response was "isn't there a babysitter or someone who could get up and entertain your kid?". I just laughed and said my DH will be there but that doesn't mean my kid will let ME sleep in!

And all day today i have been suffering because i went to bed so late and wondering if it was even worth it to go out at all.

@looch: luckily (i guess? lol) a lot of it comes from my mom so i just let her try and fail. "oh you think that LO will sleep in the car if YOU sit in the back seat with her? go for it! do whatever you want.... oh its been 2 hours and she is still not sleeping? I AM SO SURPRISED."

If I hear "Why does she eat so frequently?" one more time, I'm picking the offender up and throwing them through a window!
My MIL sent DH to check on me and baby every 15 minutes! Then she ate every 30-45mins, and she kept saying "She doesn't need to eat again! " SHE IS CRYING AND ROOTING CLEARLY SHE DOES

@Orchid: similar experience this weekend- we went to a borderline kid friendly st pats party on Saturday. One of the hosts is dh's best friend. My 19 month old did great, she was happy, funny, entertained herself pretty well, and we even stayed past nap time. But as the party goers were getting more drunk (which, totally appepriate for them, just not for us to keep our baby at), I said we should go. Dh's friend wanted me and baby to take a cab home and leave Dh there and said things along the lines of "wow babies are so much work. They kind of ruin everything, huh?"

The kicker is his wife is seven months pregnant so he will discover exactly how much things change really soon!

If she asks one more question, give her one of those baby parenting / survival books that you have on your bookshelf and say, this will be a good read and can answer all your questions! I am sure you'd enjoy it during your stay. LOL

I hate those childless people with the judgemental attitude. In her mind she probably thinks if you don't put your baby to bed at 7:30p, don't make him nap at 10am...etc. your baby will be cool as a cucumber. Can't wait to see her having kids of her own lol
