I knew a little girl with this name and I like it. I think it is OK with Louise. Not my favorite but better then Linnea Dana.

Oh, wow, surprised at all the negative reactions. I think it's beautiful and I would pronounce it Li-NAY-ah.
If you're having trouble using either Dana or Louise as a MN, would you consider two MNs? Like, Linnea ______ Louise LastName?

@Pancakes: I am thinking about it! I probably would do that for sure if this was my first child, but for some reason it bothers me that my oldest daughter only has one middle. Seems uneven or something for one child to have two middles and the other to have one? I am probably overthinking it!
I like the idea of two middles though because I'd also like to honor either my grandmother, Mary (with some varient of Mary) or my friend Holly (who passed away 2 years ago). So maybe Linnea Holly Louise (though that's pretty botanical) or Linnea Mary Louise...

I like it with the same pronunciation as linea!

I've never heard this name before! and I didn't realize it was a flower. I did think it would be pronounced Lynn-ney-a. and I also thought of linea negra. Oops. It would be a name that your LO would have to correct people on the pronunciation but that happens all the time!

I think the linea nigra worries are largely unfounded. Only pregnant or recently pregnant people or doctors are going to have this on their minds.

I love this name! It is so pretty, and has a lovely meaning. It will likely be on my short list if I ever get KU. I pronounce it like you do.
I associate it with a book we had when I was growing up, Linnea in Monet's Garden. That's where I first heard it.
Is MiL's maiden name a possibility for the middle name? Or, Louise means "warrior" - would a name with the same meaning work?
grapefruit / 4441 posts
@lady baltimore: Hmm, I dk about using the maiden name (Maguire). I don't think DH would go for using a name with the same meaning, but I appreciate the suggestion. He really just wants to use Dana; he doesn't care about the flow because he feels you really don't use the middle name that often... which is true, I suppose.

I too think of linea negra....sorry!
But we do know someone who just named her daughter Linnea!
I personally don't like the alliteration of Linnea Louise. Love Louise as a middle name though! Clara Louise is so nice....matches Julia Catherine quite nicely!

My nieces name is Linnaea Rose and we call her Linny so it has a special place in my heart.

I love the name when I hear it, but I don't love it when I see it spelled out.. My daughter's classmate spells it "Linnaea"

I like it! This was one of my favorite books growing up, and it makes me think of it http://www.amazon.com/Linnea-Monets-Garden-Cristina-Bjork/dp/9129583144

I actually think Clara Louise goes much better with Julia Catherine. I also like the sound much better.

I
Clara Louise. I'm not a fan of Linnea. I also would have thought to pronounce it Li-nee-yah.
pomelo / 5509 posts
Hmmm. I would have thought it was pronounced Lin-ee-uh the way it was spelled. And yes, it made me think linea negra. I love Clara Louise though!! So classic!
Do you like Lydia? It has sort of a similar feel to it...

@78h2o: I think it's absolutely beautiful, especially with Louise (not Dana), and that is exactly how I would pronounce it.

There is a student in the school where I work with this name. Pronounced lin-ay-uh. Most of her friends call her Nay.

I totally thought you were posting about your linea nigra. I was like, "Why does she need our thoughts on it? What is wrong with it?"

So this was not on your list, but I love love love the name Nora, and when I read that you were thinking Clara, Nora came to mind as in the same family. I think it is so beautiful. But my DH nixed it just bc it's not our name style or something - we apparently do the boy name for girls:)
I think Nora Louise is crazy beautiful! And sounds lovely with Julia Catherine.

@PrincessBaby: I like Nora and it used to be on our list before Julia was born. However, my husband's friend gave his daughter that name and now they've moved next door...so probably not a good pick anymore. Ugh! Why is this so difficult?!
Thank you so much everyone for your input.

@78h2o: I had a friend in college named Lenee (Luh-nay) and I thought her name was pretty! The spelling and the extra syllable of Linnea is just a lil too much for me!
ETA: Just saw that about your neighbor...Bummer. But she won't be your neighbor forever! What doesn't your DH like about Clara?
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
@78h2o: Just a couple of others: I also really love Claire (I kind of wish this was my name) and my favorite girl name of all time before I found DD1's name was Lauren. But I stupidly suggested that my parents name my sister that and they did! So I can't use it:(
But I think Lauren Louise is fantastic! I personally really like catchy alliterations:) And Lauren and Julia - what classic beautiful names!

I love the name Linnea!! So gorgeous. I know a Laenea.

@PrincessBaby: yeah, we might not be neighbors forever...but then again, we might. We both bought our houses with the intention of staying for 10-15+ years. I love both Laura and Lauren. DH nixed Laura but I can't remember if I asked him about Lauren. My best friend in high school was named Lauren (and she's still a good friend now), so it has a positive association for me. I don't love the alliteration with Louise, but it's not terrible. My husband initially said "maybe" to Clara, but then when I told him it was my pick, he said he didn't think he liked it. I asked why and he didn't have a reason. I haven't totally given up on it yet.

@78h2o: if you really like Nora, I wouldn't care if my neighbor had the same name. I'm naming my kid for life, not just childhood with certain people around, so unless it's family or my best friend's kid, I don't care.
grapefruit / 4441 posts
@Mrs. J: I know what you are saying, but I guess I don't love the name enough to overcome the neighbor thing. They aren't just neighbors... my husband is really good friends with the husband and the wife posts a million photos of Nora on facebook... so I feel like it would be too much Nora!
@Ra: @IRunForFun: Ugh, I know, Clara Louise is so pretty... I'm still going to work on DH to see if maybe he will come around and agree to it. I really like Lydia, but it has the same alliteration issue with Louise. Also, my only association with the name is the daughter in Pride and Prejudice. P&P was my grandmother's all time favorite book, so I get warm fuzzies from the name Lydia just because it appears there, BUT I don't love that the Lydia character was a little flighty. Makes me feel like it's not a "smart" name? I think that's probably silly though.

@lady baltimore: @nana87: I loved that book too! Whenever I hear the name linnea, it's the first thing I think of. I think it's a pretty name.
