It's just silly to me, but it's one of those things that I think some people just like to do for some reason, like chain letters LOL. I just ignore that facebook stuff and never participate.

It drives me craaaaaaazy!

I've actually found it interesting to know how many people on my FB feed support marriage equality. People that are so conservative otherwise--I've been pleasantly surprised today.

I refust to repost and participate in silliness like that! lol!

I just try to avoid FB. I use it for sharing pictures & keeping up with faraway friends/family... otherwise it drives me nuts!

@highwire: I don't like the secretive ones because I feel like it does absolutely nothing but like @blackbird: I find it interesting to know which of my friends support certain causes, like today seeing all the profiles change in support of marriage equality.

I think that for the causes that everyone knows about, such as breast cancer, FB does absolutely nothing...but I know I that I have learned about certain social issues & causes via FB and have donated. Maybe everyone doesn't donate but some people, like myself, do.

I find it annoying as heck. I feel like if you support something, support it publicly all the time, not just when a craze sweeps facebook!

I find the marriage equality stuff the FB equivalent of a candidate sign in your yard. Doesn't bother me at all. But I agree on the bra color stuff.

I think the profile pic for equal rights is totally different than the bra size thing (and just started a different thread about it).

Seeing a groundswell of agreement for an issue can totally change people's opinions or at least make them more aware of how the average Americans really feel.

I don't participate but I'm not a complete hater. Some things are more annoying than others,
The whole equality thing is somewhat interesting since I get to see where people stand.

donating money isn't the only way to help a cause. If a bunch of guys not shaving their mustaches somehow reminds one man to get a prostate check, that's helping. If a young girl with breast cancer feels better about her day because she sees people with pink profile pictures during breast cancer awareness month, that's helping. If a gay person on facebook feels more comfortable knowing that his/her friends support equality and is less scared to come out, that helps. Yes, putting something as your status or your facebook profile isn't going to CURE anything or change any laws, but if it encourages others to think about an issue or go to the doctor or make their day slightly better, it made a small difference. It's not just about SOLVING a problem, it's just a small impact.

I posted a spinoff of the equal sign -- something with words saying what I thought. My brother is gay and it means a lot to him to spread the word in whatevery way possible and I support him 10000%.

I was actually really thrilled to see all of the equals signs on facebook today, and I changed my profile pic as well. Seeing such a huge number of people raising their voices in support of gay marriage makes me happy... even if it's just a silly facebook thing, it has caused me to think all day about what is happening in Washington.

I am not a fan either because I think it makes people feel like they are contributing when they really could be doing so much more. I'm also not a fan of Toms shoes and pink Komen foundation branded items for the same reason. In the case of the Komen Foundation I read about how each $1 is split and its appalling how little money goes towards research for a cure and aid for cancer patients and survivors. A huge amount of money is spent on marketing and other admin overhead.

@sunny: I agree. I think it gives this false sense of "I really did my part to support this issue" when, really, the person didn't do hardly anything and likely had minimal impact.

I never repost anything. I don't feel like I have to prove myself to anyone on FB. I love Jesus, but I don't think I'm ignoring him by not sharing the pictures of him. I love my gramma, mom, dad, son, etc...but I don't feel like reposting the things that say how much I love anyone. It's silliness to me, and it seems a little...attention seeking.
