Lyle. I like it a lot and my husband loves it, but several of our friends are really "meh" about it. Older sister is Gwendolyn (Gwen).

Pronounced like Kyle?
I like it, and I love the idea of Ly as a nickname. Just sounds nice

I like it but I'm not crazy about it! Definitely unique and different but not way crazy or made up. That's a big thumbs up in criteria for me.

I like it, though it reminds me of an old man. I know a toddler Lyle and it suits him perfectly.

@redeyedtreefr0g: yep, pronounced like Kyle.
@Foodnerd81: totally old man!

I like it. Have you ever read Lyle, Lyle the Crocodile?

I like it, and the more I think about it/say it in my head, I love it! Like PPs said, it's not common, but it's a "real" name. The only Lyle I know of is Julia Roberts' ex and I haven't heard that name in a long time... go for it!

I'm not a fan, but all that matters is that you and your husband love it.

I like it. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce, really only one spelling possible. Thumbs up!

@Leialou: yes, I love that book!
@Ra: I definitely did think about that, but luckily no one in his generation would know about Lyle Lovett. He was such an unfortunate looking man, lol.

Reminds me of my dhs uncle!!! If it weren't for that I might like it more

I don't like it but only because it's the name of a guy who has catered for several family events and he has the dirtiest mouth of all time (makes incredibly sexual jokes about women).
blogger / pomegranate / 3491 posts
not a fan, but I'm a firm believer that as long as mom and dad love it, it's great for you.

@Ra: that's my only association
Although Lyle Lovett was not a classically handsome man, he was talented & a pretty woman found him interesting.
if you like it go for it.

I love Lyle Lyle Crocodile! Is Lyle not short for anything? If not, I think it would sound nice paired with another, longer (3-4 syllable?) name...

Good name! I think your and your husband's opinion matters most in this situation

@meredithNYC: it's my husband's name so I really like it. He gets "Kyle" a lot though. And Lloyd for some reason. ETA, his middle name is 3 syllables.
Also, ETA, If you've ever seen Lyle Lovett in concert you would totally get why Julia Roberts married him. Good Lord, that man is *incredibly* talented and may have made me swoon. SERIOUSLY.

My aunt & uncle (married) are named Lyle & Gwen. Too funny.
I'd ignore what friends say & go with what you love.

Go with your gut, I'm not a huge fan of it but that's because of a situation I had with a Lyle who wasn't a nice guy.

I know a toddler named Lyle. I love it. Unexpected, but fits a lot of preferences people have (easy to say/spell). I think it is wonderful with a Gwen.

I know a toddler named Lyle and he's the sweetest, cutest toddler!
Overall, I say go with what YOU and your DH love

I like it! I also think of Lyle Lovett, but that's not a bad thing. And like you said, I doubt many people of his generation will necessarily know who that is.

Its not for me but I knew a Lyle once too so maybe that's why

I LOVE that name! A sorority sister just named her little boy that and it makes him seem like he has an old soul already
I like older names though.

@FliegepilzHut: It's not short for anything, so I totally agree that a longer middle name is necessary (particularly as we have a one syllable, extremely common last name).
@runnerd: Must be the Lyle Lovett connection again! I'm not too worried about the "country" thing since we are so far from it. My husband is pretty much the stereotype of an Englishman, lol.
@dagret: I have never met a Lyle! It's such an uncommon name, it seems. Your husband might find this date interesting: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=lyle
@Caly: NO WAY! Two fairly uncommon names paired together like that. Crazy.
@TemperanceBrennan: Thanks!
@Iced Tea: I think so, too
Thanks, everyone, for the feedback good and bad. I had such a strong reaction from friends that I was kind of like, whoa, maybe this IS an awful name?! And I'm kind of surprised that it seems to be having a bit of a resurgence, based on the number of people who say they know little boys with this name.
