The hubby gave me the willy nilly thoughts last night about babies puking and having diaper incidents in the car seats that make me feel more comfortable purchasing new, but if a good deal came up, I'm debating if I should proceed or not. What are your thoughts on purchasing a used car seat, given it's not expired and is in good condition?

If it was from a friend and I could confirm it hadn't been in a crash then yes I would consider it.
From ebay/craigslist/consignment shop no I wouldn't.

i wouldn't consider buying one used unless it was from a close friend or family that i knew for a fact took good care of it and it was almost new. i view it as one of the most important purchases to keep baby safe, seems like a good place to spend $$.

We took hand-me-downs from family for backup carseats (for nannies, babysitters, grandparents cars, etc). But our primary carseats (convertibles and boosters) will be new. Since you use them for so many years I think it's a good investment to buy new. We waited for our Britax Marathon to go on clearance (new year's model came out) and snapped it up from Amazon.

Like PP, only if I knew the person really well.
The only 3 things I told myself I had to buy new were: Carseats, a crib & breast pump. Pretty much everything else I'm cool with doing used.

We are borrowing one from a friend. Her son only used it for 4 months till he was too long for it. Since I know who used it, know it wasn't in an accident, and they took care of it, we were fine with borrowing it. Along with the threes bases. She even rewashed it before bringing it over to use, since it was in the attic in a box. It looks practically brand new.

Ditto....Only from close friends and family.
We ended up with one from SIL.....it is pretty well-used, so we kept it as a backup and bought new.

Yup only from someone I know and trust. I'm less concerned about the gross factor (babies spit up and have diaper blow outs on everything, so everything is meant to be cleaned) but more about the safety.
A friend offered to sell me hers, that she bought from another friend I know, so I'm sure it's never been in an accident but I'm wondering if 2 babies' worth of uses is too much. It's only 2 years old though.

we have a used carseat from a neighbor. we knew she took good care of it and that it wasn't that old. we just washed everything really good.

I would only use it if I would trust my babies life with the person who I was buying it from. Car seats are one of those items that are so critical safety wise, and some people just don't know that you need to replace them if you have even had a minor fender bender, or drop.
