Has anyone tie dyed with kids? Any tips and tricks I should be aware of? Planning it as an activity to do this summer while on staycation.

I saved this link and while ago. Haven't done it yet, but I thought it had some good tips. I liked the idea of having some white cloth napkins for grownups to play with, too!

I have done it a few times with kids. Depending on the quantity of kids you have you can either use the squirt bottles or tubs. If you want lots of colors and the kids are younger the squirt bottles work best because they can maneuver the colors better young kids dipping seem to just dunk the whole thing and mess up the dye buckets. But the squirt bottles go through more dye then the dipping. I would also get gloves for you and kids and no one should where clothes they care about.

We just did it with our boys. We let them pick the design and then we did the rubber bands. Then we let them pick and put the Colours on ( we helped because they are only 1.5 and 3.5) the want to wear the shirts any time they see them in their closet. They love that they made them.

We tie-dyed at our block party and the person running the event bought a kit with the squirt bottles (rather than dunking in tubs). It was so much less messy with the squirt bottles and the shirts came out great (even after washing). I would definitely look into a kit with the squirt bottles.

@Mrs. Train and @Aandmklover: what dye do you use? Is RIT ok? Do you do the soak in soda ash, or just plain water before you color? And what about your wash process?Also, I plan to do the squeeze bottles. I think we'd get better color control that way. I am way too anxious to do the large buckets!

@looch: we did not soda ash because it was kind of spur of the moment. We got the shirts and tie dye kits that were the bottles from Wal-mart. We've since looked other places and Wal-mart was by far the cheapest for the tie dye kits. I would not get rit. It does penetrate the fibers of the shirt and will bleed and wash off. Use tulip brand like these, there are lots of sets with different Color combos; unless you choose to do larger dip dye.

Use similar colors (red, pink, orange, yellow) or (blue, green, purple) to avoid the colors getting too muddy and brown.

I just did this with my DD and her friend. We used a tulip brand kit, it was very easy and it provided great instructions. The only thing that threw me off was having to wash and dry the shirts before you are ready to dye. Once we had that ready it was a very fast process and the girls wore aprons and gloves. The kit only came with two pairs of gloves so make sure you have some for yourself if you are helping.

Just thought I would report back, we did the tie dying with one of those Tulip kits and my son just adored it. I watched a couple of You Tube videos on how to do the folds in advance. The squeeze bottles were surprisingly easy to handle and the washing part wasn't too terrible afterwards. Highly recommend!
