We are paying a fortune for our move. But, I should probably tip the guys that actually move our stuff, right? How much?

We tipped ours $500. We self packed, but DH has a lot of bulky and insanely heavy shop equipment (that he had already crated and put on wheels). I'm not sure if it was too little or too much. We also gave them money for dinner each day they packed because they worked through lunch. (Father son team.)

@winniebee: I was always pretty generous with my tips... but looking online, it appears that tips aren't required/expected! And that if you did, the industry standard was up to 5%.

You could always call the moving company and ask for advice... they should have some guidelines around tipping!

I have no clue what is approprate, but I tipped my movers $20 each. $15-40 each depending on how curteous and careful they are.

I should add that we're moving cross country, so they're taking 2 vehicles as well.

We tipped $100 per guy for a move across town.
ETA: We didn't have them unpack anything. They seemed very happy with the tip.

You guys are so generous. My move was rather local 40 minutes and it was a small move that I packed myself.. I forgot to tip the movers who moved DH from a different state. They packed and unpacked too. Hmm I should have given them something.

We were moving across town, I can't remember how much we tipped them but I think it was maybe $50 a mover. We also got them a 6 pack of beer.

We had a 5 hour move from a one bed highrise to our 3 story townhome (but had tons of stuff). It took about 5 hours. I prob over tipped, but gave $100 between the 3 movers. I think $20-25 per guy for a local move is ok.

I think we gave our long-distance guys around $200 a piece. The two of them did all the packing, drove 17 hours straight, and put up with an unreasonably ornery condo manager who followed them around to make sure they didn't mark the walls while they moved some of our furniture in...they earned every damn penny! They were visibly elated with this tip.
For a local move, we do somewhere between $50-$100pp for a packing-and-moving job. The time I had pick-up-and-delivery-only movers who were 3 hours late in arriving and didn't bother to apologize for wasting my time or costing me an extra $100 (condo fee since I missed my window for the loading dock), I just said good-bye.
For reference, all of our moves have involved either a 1 or 2BR apartment. I'd probably up my tip a bit for a whole house of furniture. Until recently we only had a few pieces of heavier furniture, but lots of books. Lots and lots of books.

We moved about 30 minutes away and packed up everything ourselves and we didn't have tons of heavy furniture, but we had boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes of heavy books and LP records. We tipped $20 per guy and also bought them coffee and donuts for breakfast, and pizza/subs/etc. for lunch.
