Well, I'm not having a baby shower for a number of reasons (mostly bc I moved to a new city and can't travel back home), but one of my siblings insist that they send an email to friends and family saying if you would like to get me something, here are my registries.
I feel like this could put people in an awkward position and if people would like to get me something, I'm assuming they will just ask me if I have a registry. Am I being idiotic?

Not at all idiotic! I think I'd feel the same way. While, I'd of course appreciate gifts sans baby shower, I wouldn't want to impose either. I think I'd probably send the registry to my closest girlfriends and immediate family members who I know would buy things for baby anyway and would want to buy things that we want/need. I'm not sure how far I would extend that e-mail list out to ALL people I would have invited were there a baby shower.

This can go so many ways!
If you don't have a registry, people may still want to send you a little something, and for most people that's clothing (which I am very picky about and hate to receive).
I didn't have a shower because I live abroad, but I did make a registry to keep track of stuff I needed to buy while on my last visit in the US. I was surprised to receive stuff from it, mostly from friends when they rec'd our birth announcement.
I personally didn't distribute the registry info, and would probably be pretty put off if I got an email from a friend's sib with the info.

I personally did not send to anyone unless they asked me if I had one. I also did not have a baby shower.

Thx, Ladies. I think I'm just going to go with my gutt and not do it. I am sure if people want to get me something, they'll speak up. If not, it's fine.

I agree with others - if you are not having a shower, you shouldn't distribute your registry to people. Definitely have one on hand in case people ask you for the information, but sending it out to people without having a party just looks greedy. People who want to buy you something will ask you first.

I think it would work best if you have a registry for things you know you need at some stores people know about - Babies R Us and Target, for example. If they want to send you something, they will probably go to one of those sites to try to find you. I know that's what I did for friends who didn't have showers!!
Also, word of mouth works great. If your sibling wants to tell people that you're registered at such and such, I say let him or her. It won't hurt you if they do it, you know?

I agree with the others. And I bet a million people will ask where your registered anyway. People love buying baby gifts!

I think if your sister wants to email everyone or a select few and attach the registry info that's fine... AND totally on her if someone feels put off by it.
I think you have to look at your circle of family and friends as well for things like this b/c everyone on WB and other forums told me NOT to put our wedding registry info in our invite and well when everyone got our invite they thought that was dumb and asked CONSTANTLY for the info and why I didn't include it.
If I was close with someone who no longer lived around here but was expecting, I wouldn't feel put off by getting that info. Infact there have been plenty of times I'd rather just get something and NOT have to go to the shower. lol

Likewise, I wouldn't email the list. An aquaintance did and it was awkward for some people. For sure, people will ask and at that point you can tell.

I've received registry info from mutual friends of the pregnant lady, or from the person's sister/mom, and it never bothered me. It would bother me if I received it from the person itself, to be honest, but I don't think I would mind if it were from someone else.

i agree with the ladies above - i think you should get your sister to email some close friends and family. stating that since you're not having a baby shower, that she (your sister) thought if anyone was interested, that you're registered at so and so.

Agree with the pps. We actually received a paper list of where a friend was registered in the mail. It was sort of a pre-birth announcement, I guess? My husband and I called it our invitation to buy them a gift, and thought it was kind of inappropriate. We bought them a present, but would have regardless. I think most people are savvy enough to find your registry on their own, or they'll just ask you for the info.

I appreciate getting baby registry info from others, to be honest. Maybe it's just me. I LOVE getting gifts for babies, but am usually too shy to ask for the registry info, and end up getting something they may not have wanted to begin with.
