DS (14 months) has recently started grinding his (8) teeth. How do I discourage this??? I know it can't be healthy and its also driving me crazy.

My son likes to grind his teeth on the metal part of his phil and ted's clip on high chair, drives me bananas! The instant he starts, then bfast/lunch/dinner is over and I take him out of the chair. I have no idea how I would get him to stop if he was just grinding his teeth though! I hope someone has some good advice for you!

My LO started to do this around 11 months or so and I asked her doctor at her one year appointment even though it had stopped. She still does it now when she's getting new teeth.
He said that it's pretty harmless and probably a sign of teething. He always checks her teeth and made sure to check more carefully after I told him she had been grinding her teeth. He said that, for kids that young, it's usually only an issue when the child has some kind of mental disability or developmental delay (his daughter with Down Syndrome is a teeth grinder). He told me just to call if it's constant for a longer time but that it's really just her dealing with the teething pain and not a big deal. I know it sounds horrible though! I thought she was eating something crunchy the first time I heard it!

This is like nails on a chalkboard for me. But she only does it when teething.

@BelugaBean: @Weagle: @sorrycharlie: I didn't even think about it having to do with teething! That makes sense. He's definitely getting new teeth right now. He has a runny nose and he's been extra cranky and clingy.

@lilyann: I think that's a smart idea! I'd totally do the same thing in that circumstance. Last time he did it I just told him no and kind of squeezed his cheeks to get him to stop. No idea if it helped haha.

My son does it occasionally...it is such an awful sound! I try and just ignore it and not make a big deal about it and he usually stops. I definitely think it relates to teething though,
