DS is 21 months and still puts everything in his mouth, not little pieces like legos or marbles, it seems like he likes to hold toys and gnaw on them. He’ll lick mirrors, the doors, his high chair. The other day we were at the pediatrician and he licked the exam table and the floor. THE FLOOR! He’s not teething, he’s always been like this. Any ideas on how to stop it? I try redirect him but if I took away every toy he put in his mouth he wouldn’t have anything to play with.

We used a sensory chew necklace from Amazon to redirect and eventually the need tapered off.

I can only think of a pacifier.

I recommend something similar to @MrsSRS: to fulfill the need to place something his mouth. They also make bracelets for that purpose.

@crazydoglady: Yeah we took his pacifier away a month or two ago and I was hoping the oral fixation would resolve itself but it’s probably just gotten worse.

No idea, my 3 1/2 DD licked the steering wheel of the car cart at the grocery store this morning. Then did it a second time after getting in trouble for the first time 🤦♀️ the worst part was they didn't have the cart wipes, so there's no telling how nasty it was 🤢

@LadyDi: if it makes you feel better my 5 year old still does stuff like this occasionally, but the chew jewelry like @MrsSRS recommended helped a TON this time last year

@Kemma: Ewwew c'mon kid!! My 2nd is totally orally fixated (1st never put ANYTHING in his mouth). It's like I'm a first time mom dealing with him, I'm always on edge! Today he threw up a dog food kibble, sticker and a piece of mulch.

Yeah my 4yo still does this fairly often so idk what to tell you 🤦♀️
