Help me, bees! I have a 16 month old and a one week old, and whenever baby cries, big brother bursts into hysterical tears and ear-piercing shrieks. And we're not even talking about a loud baby cry, basically every time baby so much as whimpers, or if you're at the other end of the house where the cry is rarely audible, he will crawl over to where baby is (having a fit the entire time) and then throws himself down on the floor at your feet. This most commonly happens during diaper changes and when I'm getting LO latched on.
I've been googling like crazy, but all of the advice I've come across involves reasoning with the toddler, but I have a 16 month old who is a bit behind in his verbal skills, so that's really just not a realistic plan. I still do explain to him since obviously he'll eventually be old enough to understand before I know it, but for right now this does me no good. Do I ignore him? Comfort him? Something else? I'm really hoping this is just a matter of getting used to it, but I'm totally baffled by how to handle it in the meantime.
I wish I knew if he was trying to get attention or is legitimately upset - he's really been very good with the transition so far and is always excited to see his baby brother, doesn't seem to be jealous or anything. The tantrums are kind of a new thing that are suddenly sprouting in lots of areas though, so maybe I should just handle it the same way I am his other tantrums (we're trying out the Love & Logic approach at the moment, but it's so new we're waiting to see a difference with that too!)
