I think we'll be ok with a bunch of games and tv shows on the ipad for Charlie. But I'm also taking masking tape (build roads and so much more), stickers, markers + paper, a couple toy cars/trains, play doh, books and I'll wrap a couple of cheap, small surprises.
Do you have any recommendations for great (small) toys for airplane travel?

I always loved the invisible ink 'magic pen' books when I was little. I think they have some for kids that work somewhat like a coloring book. The 'magic pen' though can't color anything but the book.
He's probably a little young for something like a Rubik cube but some puzzle like thing might work.

the aquadoodle travel kit! we also had one of those sticker books with the shiny pages so the stickers are repositionable, which was fun. kinda like this one:

i also had little dollar bin type trinkets and we gave him one every 2 hours or so. and...never underestimate the power of lollipops. like magic. and also great for take-off and landing to help with the ear popping!

My lo is a year younger than Charlie so I don't have much advice. I went out and bought some toys for the airplane and she didn't play with any of them. She played with the bag of prezels and cup they gave us instead.

@artbee: yah when charlie was 12 months and we flew to la, he had no interest in toys. the people around us were the most interesting things!

The wonder color markers. They don't make as much of a mess and still are fun to color with. They have travel kits with a coloring book and everything. The iPhone with the fisher-price and other games are always good.

Crayola dry erase crayons and board, button snake if you have time, and a puzzle with magnets. books are good too, I found.

i try to limit them to just take off and landing (one for each), but have one or two extras just in case!

How about felt quiet books? They're light an easy to stuff in a bag. You can make your own if you have time but a friend of ours got us a bunch of felt common fairy tale characters. My son doesn't know a lot of the stories yet but you can just make them up as you go. Felt will just stick together so you can make one big felt sheet into a book form and stick the smaller pieces of felt on to make up stories.

I think you got it covered! Better to be over prepared than under and if they are fine on the way over, save some ammo for the ride home.
