My little guy is 3 1/2 and has been potty learning since 18 months old. He is pee trained and getting better at poop. But we are having a problem where he isn't finishing. He pees (we see/hear it) and then within 30 minutes he has an accident. Anyone gone through this and have any suggestions?

My daughter has the opposite problem, but we're having trouble too. She'll let out small amounts of pee in her undies, rather than just going to the bathroom. She does this routinely, so I often check her and find that her undies are just a little wet. Once she goes to the potty, she lets out the rest.
She seems to be slowly improving lately. One thing I've been encouraging her to do is to "push all of the pee out" every time she sits on the potty. We also have a looming reward that she'll be able to sign up for music classes at daycare once she goes a full week with no potty accidents. I think we might finally achieve that goal in the near future, but we'll see...

@brownie: You can try distraction techniques (a book, toy, or coloring book he only gets in the bathroom) or double voiding...sitting back on the potty 15 minutes after going the first time. Make sure he isn't using his "belly muscles" to force pee out. Increasing intra-abdominal pressure to augment a bladder contraction can lead to dysfunctional voiding. And because it usually is not a well coordinated bladder contraction, it is easy to leave residual urine in the bladder. Also, make sure he isn't constipated!

@skibobrown: he's doing this too. That's been an on going issue but that I can live with. These are now full on accidents. He hasn't had these kinds of accidents for two months and now it is multiple a day.
@Espion: at home, he takes his nexus and will happily sit on the potty for hours. He did that today and had a full on accident when he came out (lost his nexus privileges). Fairly certain he isn't constipated (he isn't vomiting which usually happens, and he is pooping every night). For once I think his poop is working.
I will suggest the double voiding to preschool.
