The SSA just released the top 10 baby names of 2014. I'm surprised Emma is #1! And that Elizabeth isn't on the list. Is your LO's name on the list?

Two of my all time favorite boys' names made the list, in fact they are 1 and 2 on the list.
When I was in college I wanted to have three daughters: Kennedy, Reagan, and #9 Madison.
So many of the girls name end in -a.

Ds was almost a Noah but it's just too popular! I still love it though

Glad to see Elizabeth has dropped in popularity a bit (since that's what we'll be naming our daughter in June). I know it will always be high because it's classic but nice to see it out of the top 10.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Are we the same person?!? Kennedy, Reagan, and Madison were my three girl names in college! And Noah was my top boy name! I met an Ava right before law school, and that has been my girl name for the past 5 years. But, it didn't feel right for this LO, so we are going with something else!

@dc yoga bee:
@Mrs.KMM: Elizabeth is such a great name. My friends with it as a first or middle name usually have familial ties to it. What about you? In a similar vain I like Meredith.

Charlie is 225. Getting a little more popular each year! 10 years ago it was at 350.
And wow Olive is 282! 8 years ago it wasn't in the top 1000. So I guess they have comparably popular names, though I've only encountered a couple Olives and tons of Charlies.

Yep, both of my girls are in the top ten! Being outside of the top ten was never a concern of mine - which is good considering DD2 shares a name with the newest royal, which is sure to send her name popularity through the roof!

My LO's name is now just outside the top 100. I like that! Not super common but not dated either,

@Mrs. Bee: Are you factoring in those named Charles that go by Charlie? I bet if you add those in with those named Charlie it's a lot more!
LO's name made a big jump in 2013. In 2014 it only increased popularity by 4 points. It's in the top 50 but not top 25. I would have preferred to stay out of the top 100 but I love her name so much!

@daniellemybelle: that's true! so charlie is probably much more popular!
eggplant / 11716 posts
LO #1 dropped a bit and is now in the 70's...still popular but not super popular. There is one other girl in her daycare with her name, but they are in different classes.
LO #2 is in the 500's

I read a baby name blog and she did a run down of trends she though were notable: http://www.swistle.com/babynames/2015/05/08/2014-social-security-administration-data/
Things that she mentioned that stood out to me:
Everly jumped up the rankings super fast - #905 in 2012, #380 in 2013, #178 in 2014
Adelyn and many different spelling have all jumped: "Adelyn is up (from #212 to #197) and Adalynn is up (#173 to #128) and Adalyn is up (#178 to #152) and Adeline is up (#233 to #219)"
"Emily, too, surprises me with its persistence: still in the Top 10, and it’s been there for well over two decades."

They are all really good names... But poor Charlotte has a date with #1 soon!
Theodore jumped from 198 to 126... My most popular choice yet. Cecilia is up to 206 (240's when I chose it). Magnolia was 980 when I chose it and it's climbed to the 800's.
And I'm stunned that Jaxson (with that spelling) is #83.

@Mrs. Jacks: Cecilia doesnt surprise me as there is a pretty popular alt rock song called "Cecelia and the Satellite" and its very sweet

My Los name went up a little more but nothing too bad (still outside the top 100.) All the boy names we like went down, although 2 of the 3 are very popular.
Thanks for sharing!!!

@Chillybear: hmm... I don't think of Andrew McMahon as that influential (I follow Indie pop some... But maybe I'm out of the loop?) but I do agree that it's a sweet song

@Mrs. Jacks: I'm also shocked that so many people use the spelling Jaxson.

Our first choice name for baby to be isn't i the top 10, but it's definitely top 100. I'm surprised Charlotte is so high, I don't know any Charolettes.

James and Olivia are on our long list. Well, James is at the top, but I wonder if James is always on this list.

@Mrs. Jacks: I teach first grade and between two classes there are four Jacksons that spell their names 3 different ways.

DD's name is on the rise. It was 357 the year she was born (2011), and now it's up to 251. Not surprising since I'm hearing it more and more, but I'm ok with that - familiar but not popular. DS' name hasn't been in the Top 1000 since 2007!
I like the little data snippet at the bottom of each name, gives more perspective.
Even the top name, Emma, is only ~1% of the population:
More information for female name Emma:
- For 2014, the number of births with name Emma is 20799, which represents 1.073 percent of total female births in 2014.
- The year when the name Emma was most popular is also 2014.

I'm not surprised that Charlotte has made it into the top 10.

@bluestriped bee: you can look at the popularity of individual names. The lowest James has been is 19! I love the name.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@daniellemybelle: I wonder on the popularity of my sons name based on that too- he goes by his nickname 80% of the time, which is Cobi- but also spelled Kobe (more popular), but his full name which is Jacobi isn't in the top 1000, but Jacoby is.

Nope, DD's name is in the 30s....and one of our name choices for DD #2 is in the 300s!
nectarine / 2460 posts
@bluestriped bee: I actually remember reading recently that James is the most popular boy name of English speaking countries of all time (recently surpassing John). I can't find that article, but here's one about it being #1 in the US for the past century: http://lifestyle.howstuffworks.com/family/parenting/babies/10-most-popular-baby-names-of-all-time.htm#page=10. Our DS is James and it amazed me how many people came out after we picked that name and were like "oh, that's my real name but I go by...."

Wow, my daughter's name has gone from #984 (when we named her) to #549 as of this year. That is NUTS!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
C's name is creeping up but still out of the top 100 for now. It's more popular in MA than the U.S. Overall though, and I know it's getting more popular.
I love when these listings come out every year. It's funny looking at some of the names with similar rankings as it goes higher- a way out there (to me) name will be next to something that I think of as very normal, like Seth.
nectarine / 2272 posts
@plantains: on sons of anarchy, the character is Jackson but goes by the nickname Jax, which may explain that.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Nope – no family ties here. We just like the name!
DD will be Elizabeth Grace (nn Ellie)!
cherry / 154 posts
I LOOOOOOOVE the name Emma. I would still strongly consider naming a daughter that despite its popularity!
