FYI I had placed an order last week for a bunch of small things to use up a gift card. I got half the items really quickly, then several days later got an email saying they couldn’t mail twonof the items and don’t know when (or if) they will and that they will refund my credit card.

oh no... I placed an order and now I can't find my email receipt. I hope they don't cancel it.

Man, CNN needs to hire (or re-hire) its copyeditors:
"Expecting parents who have already set up a baby registry at Babies "R" Us will be able to access it until the webstore stays open."
What?

We went to Toys R Us last night (we had gift cards to spend) and I was pretty disappointed in the sale. only 10% off most things. 20% off clothes and books. We did scan a few things to see how much they are and the scanner showed the sale was ending today...so maybe they're going to bring out bigger discounts tomorrow?? We went ahead and spent our gift cards and one purchase was of a big rig truck that holds hotwheels and it comes with a smaller big rig that says "Toys R Us" on it. DS loves all things trucks and cars but I mostly wanted it for nostalgia! Another childhood store gone.

I guess Bed Bath & Beyond/Buy Buy Baby are offering to give you up to 65% in store credit for your remaining Babies R Us and Toys R Us giftcards. I heard on the radio yesterday or today was the last day for giftcards and the online store is now shut down.

@MrsMom: i never bought from them unless i had a giftcard for this very reason. Everything was always way overpriced compared to the exact same item at walmart or Amazon

@Mrsbells: We are the same, They start out so high to begin with. Most likely why they're going out of business. I've been collecting these gift cards since his 1st birthday and he's 3 now. We just never went.
@Sams Mom: I heard about that and was going to do it if we couldn't find anything for him, but luckily we were able to buy several things. I know that the website shut down a day or so ago, but they had said before the gift cards would be honored until 04/21, I wonder if that's changed?

We went to the store yesterday and the $150 playhouse we bought DD from amazon was $300 with 10% off at toys r us. Yeah, no.

@MrsMom: I bought diapers with my gift cards. Im sure they weren’t the best price but I didn’t feel totally ripped off since I had to use the card anyway.

@dc yoga bee: HA! and we wonder why they're going out....
I do feel bad for all the employees being affected though! Not only the people working directly in Toys R Us, but the suppliers and truck drivers as well. So sad!

Does anyone know if car seats are on sale? I am in Canada, but if i knew i could get an awesome deal on a chicco keyfit, i would make the drive to Buffalo for it.

I went in today because DD3 has been stealing DD2's baby doll, and I thought Toys R Us was likely to have the best in-store selection. Everything was full price with 10% off (excluding diapers); LEGO was 5% off. Some sections were a little leaner than usual, but it almost seemed like that may have been done to create artificial demand (i.e., there was one of every Calico Critters family out rather than full shelves - an oddly balanced selection if items were truly flying off the shelves). My store is open for about another six weeks, so I'll try back in a few.
I've never thought TRU prices were great, but I'll miss the in-store experience. Target just isn't the same...but I wonder if/hope other stores (like Target) may beef up their toy departments in an effort to draw TRU customers.

I’m always surprised when people complain about TRU pricing, they always price matched! And nothing beat the in store experience. I took my kids one last time and left so sad and misty eyed.

@Boogs: I’ve never been impressed with the in store experience. Every location near us was dirty, run down, disorganized, poorly staffed and just a general displeasure to go into.

@Jennibenni: agreed- ours was not a nice experience. They'd have 2 people at registers with a line of 15 customers. The people at customer service barely spoke. They looked miserable and were completely unfriendly. The nursing area and bathrooms reeked to high heaven of dirty diapers. And I never once had an employee able to help me find what I was looking for. Even when doing my registry. I like shopping in stores better than online, but our TRU was not a fun shopping trip.
@Boogs: I don't think they advertised the price matching well. I didn't know about it until this last year.

I think the in-store experience must vary a lot by store! I live near two TRU and one BRU. One of the stores was always a mess and no one seemed to know where to find what I need, but the other two are very neat and the staff have always been so helpful. I'm surprised by the variability, they're not even a franchise, are they? It just seems to be inconsistent management.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I say "In Store Experience", I'm only referring to the WOW factor of ALL.THOSE.TOYS.
Customer service was never really great, but my kids don't notice that..and since we did more looking than buying at Toys R Us, it didn't matter much.
RE: Price matching - I always felt the policy was unclear....did they match to other stores sale prices? Their online prices? Since I could usually find things at places I was going anyway (target) or on Amazon cheaper, it just never seemed worth the effort. I guess my mentality part of the problem that put them out of business.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@PinkElephant: The fact that they weren’t clear about it was part of the problem. They matched to Amazon so I often did that and could get it right away, rather than wait for it to be shipped.

@Jennibenni: @travellingbee: @Mama Bird: @PinkElephant: Sure the experience for the parent wasn’t always awesome, but going there was always for my kids. There were some employees we really liked at our local store and it was such a fun one. That one closed for some sort of high density housing and we had a drive a bit for the next closest one that didn’t have the same huge wow factor, but it took in some of our favorite employees that had been displaced and still filled the kids’ eyes with wonder. Nowhere else around us has anywhere as many toys to check out, bikes to try, a train table, ride on toys to sit in, etc. It was magic for kids. As for price matching, nowadays you just have to assume all stores do it and at least ask.

Just an update, we went in yesterday bc I had like a $25 gift card from BRU. FYI: I've had this for like 3 years bc I never go there. This one had BRU and TRU connected together.
Even with the discounts, nothing was "cheaper" than Amazon prices. In fact, with the discount, it was about the same amount as Amazon. We just ended up buying a new bike helmet for my LO1 (she outgrew her other one) bc we had this gift card.
There is a WOW factor of so many toys but for me, I think it's too overwhelming and we prob won't miss it.
