T does not transfer during naps. Once you unbuckle him, he's wide awake even if it's only been 5-10 mins. Today, it was 20. My husband insisted on transferring him even though I told him it doesn't work and even though I was willing to read my kindle in the car. I'm so pissed that he is going to have a 20 minute nap today and it could have been prevented.

It doesn't work for either kid. I can't even lift the infant seat out without the baby waking up. I just find a drive thru and wait in the car.

Heck no. We don't do car naps unless I know we'll be driving at least 90 minutes, and even then sometimes he'll wake up after half that time and not go back to sleep.

@Mrs. Yoyo: I try to avoid them at all costs too, but we pushed the envelope today and are going to pay dearly. He's been in his crib 30 minutes and is still wide awake.

Nope...he never transfers!!! He wakes up as soon as the car stops. But the longest he's ever slept in the car is an hour so we avoid car naps as much as we can!

My toddler doesn't transfer well but the baby does ok!

@winniebee: nope never has on the rare chance that he actually fell asleep in his seat. If I try to put him back in his crib he never falls back asleep!

I can normally rock him back to sleep as long as he hasn't slept more than 15 minutes. if he's had more than 15 minutes our chance of a nap is long gone

She doesn't wake up when I transfer her in the infant car seat. But I'm worried about when we switch to a convertible - I'm pretty sure she'll wake up!

Yes, LO transfers like a pro. I've only woken him up accidentally once or twice in the past year. We even got rained on once (no garage and I had no umbrella) and he slept through it! It took a while to get to this point, though.

ONCE in a blue moon she'll transfer. But there have also been times when I've pulled into the parking garage and she's fallen asleep while I looked for a spot, and napped for 6 minutes. And then was wide awake. Now I just do anything I can to keep her awake.

Nope, he never transfers. He wakes up as soon as the car stops, so if I want him to keep napping, I have to keep driving! (and hope I don't hit any long red lights, lol)

Never, When we are on the way home from running errands I'm always doing whatever I can to keep him awake so that it won't mess up his naps.

Nope, it has worked only once since we moved to the convertible car seat. I read a book, or go for a drive. I can't wait for cooler weather, I hate wasting gas on running the a/c!

No and that's why I try as much as possible to have LO not fall asleep in the car during her nap, unless we are going to be driving a long distance. She will wake up as soon as we try to move her, no matter how long she's been sleeping. It does put some pressure on me, since I don't have a huge window of time to run errands, but I'd rather have her take a long nap in her crib!

@luckypenny: Just turned 3. I have a technique: the car nap has to have been at least 5 minutes long and not more than 30, give or take. Unbuckle him carefully; his arms should be limp. Then, if he stirs, I often whisper 'we're home, honey, I'm going to take you inside,' while scooping him out of the seat. I place his head against my shoulder and my 'free' hand over his exposed ear. Walk into the house with his face pointed away from the sun, if possible. Open door carefully (you have to put your keys in the correct pocket!), go in quietly, and put him down gently in bed (he sleeps in a floor bed). If his eyes open, put your hand on his chest/rub his back until they close again. Et voila! The art of the car nap transfer.
I think the critical piece is doing the transfer when he's really out. If its been like 2 minutes, it's harder, and longer than 30 or so, he will sometimes wake up. I'm guessing this has to do with his sleep cycle.
Like I said, we don't have a garage, so I imagine this would be even easier with one. Also, we have stairs to go up--just try to keep the jostling to a minimum. I usually leave my bags in the car and go back to get them once he's down.

The only good thing about the 20 minute nap is sleeping from 7-7:15 straight this morning ; )
