Xander is just two weeks old and last night he was awake for HOURS. Like 3.5! He was fussy and acted hungry and I kept nursing him and he seemed like he'd fall asleep, only to wake up immediately and seem to want more food! This isn't normal, is it??

Yep normal. He's a growing boy looking for food. Those early days were spent constantly cluster feeding for me.

Was he stuffy at all? LO has done thi when she has a stuffy nose, the sucking helps clear it. Otherwise I would guess just a rough noght and he was nursing for comfort. I am sorry you had a rough go last night:(
How is he doing today?
ETA: sorry I missed the two week part (my eyes somehow saw 2 months). Could definitely be cluster feeding too, like a pp said.

Yes it's normal! I remember in the early weeks, my son would be up for hours in the middle of the night. We spent so long trying to get him back to sleep that he would get hungry again!

sounds like cluster feeding to me...!! this is the worst time for sleep, trust me, it gets better...!!! hang in there and watch some good TV!!

ahhhhh cluster feeding! i am not sure if it was a one off thing but it seemed that if i woke my LO every two hours during the day he would clusterfeed from 6-10ish and then sleep for about 4 hours - was glorious!
i echo it gets easier!

@Bookworm: haha, I hear you! I had never heard of cluster feeding until I had the baby! And it SUCKS.
BUT at least once he was done (around 11:00 p.m.), he slept for a couple good stretches so I was able to get some sleep.

@Adira: there's a growth spurt around 2-3 weeks, so it seems like you're in the midst of it right now. i had a day like that yesterday and my DS is 2.5 weeks old too!

@Mrs. High Heels: Ohhh, I forgot about the growth spurts - maybe that's what's going on! The crazy feeding during a growth spurt only lasts a couple days, right?

cluster feeding is related to growth spurts too. they cluster feed to get your body to produce more milk... so that they'll have enough once they're done with the "spurt". hang in there mama! - it's much easier to get through when you know that this will soon pass!

Oh geez, my baby barely slept at that age - always nursing or WIDE awake. haha. it gets better.

We are definitely in a growth spurt too: lots of cluster feeding during the day, lots of hungry wake ups at night. My husband and I need naps!

Yep! Nobody explained cluster feeding to me until I was in the hospital and he was doing it every 20 minutes the 2nd night! I barely remember the 2nd weeks but they have periods of time where they'll do this. Just wait till the 4 and 6-week growth spurts (the latter of which we're in now). 6-week he just never sleeps. But 4-week almost killed me with all the nursing. He gained 2 lbs in less than 2 weeks and toughened up my nipples!

@ladyfingers: Ahh! Now I'm scared! These first two weeks have been hard enough... I don't know if I can survive worse!

@Adira: also - if they are away for more than two hours they start to get over tired and fussy. it is a vicious cycle! i used to try and start soothing him at about 1.5hours of being awake even if that meant holding him in arms/babywearing.

@littlebittyhouse: I had heard that! I kept trying to put him down to sleep, but he was NOT having it! Or he would fall asleep, but then wake up 10 minutes later and want more food!
I think it must be a growth spurt because he did the same thing last night as the night before - awake for 3.5 hours cluster feeding! I just hope I'm only in for one more night like that (or none) because it's rough having him attached to my boobs for that long!!

@Adira: ahhhhh so frustrating sometimes. i bet he'll have gained at his appointment tomorrow! i can remember crying to my hubby after the first growth spurt saying 'i can't do this' and here we are 8mo later....
