I'm thinking of just inviting a few local families over for cake to celebrate my LO's 2nd birthday. My question is if that constitutes as a party? I am envisioning more of a play date + cake in the afternoon. Do I have to send out paper invites or would an email suffice? I just want to do something low key but I don't want it to seem lame. If so, then I just won't bother. Just wanted to get everyone's opinion!

I think it can be whatever you want it to be. If you want a lo key party, emails would be fine!

@Andrea: I always had big parties (not huge like you see on tv, but themed with decorations, gifts, cake, etc) so I'm always a fan of birthday parties! But it can get expensive and it's a lot of work, and really at that age your LO won't even remember it. Having people over so your LO can play, have fun, and eat cake sounds nice!

Oh, email seems totally fine to me! We plan on doing super low key too because we threw such a big one for the 1 year birthday. I think we're seriously just doing pizza/burgers/cake at a park and plan on inviting a few family members and friends. SUPER low key. And we plan on doing emails too.

@banana: yeah, i still remember how much work the 1st bday party was! since no one else seems to be doing 2nd bday parties i won't either. maybe for the 3rd we'll go to gymboree or something.

We're attending a low key backyard BBQ and cake birthday party for a 1 year old this weekend. The hostess sent an email to invite us and 5 other families, which I thought was perfect and totally appropriate.

That's what I'm planning to do for LO's 2nd birthday too. Just family and a couple of friends with kids her age. Just call it a birthdate playdate, it'll be cozy

@andrea: Yeah, we'll do a low key party for the 2nd birthday and maybe throw something bigger once he actually knows what a birthday is for his 3rd birthday party. I LOVE throwing parties so i'm looking forward to his 3rd.
