I had all 4 removed under twilight anesthesia. It was great--I don't remember a thing and recovery was fine. DH had them out under local and that was also fine for him I think-I just know I didn't want to be awake during it!

I had local anesthesia for the 2 I had removed. I was in another country and I didn't have a choice. I was very nervous, but it was fine. I didn't have any severe impacting or anything, so that may have made a difference.

Twilight and I had all four at once. I am very glad since they said one was really hard to get out and I would NoT have wanted to be awake for that!!

I hope it goes smoothly for you either way. It's no fun.

Have the teeth erupted? I had 2 wisdom teeth only and they had both erupted. I chose local and it was fine. I was very scared of anesthesia so it worked for me. I could also have my own de twist do it instead of an oral surgeon so that helped me make the choice as well.

@lamariniere: must be twilight--I think for general you need to be intubated (like for real surgery in an OR).

I had a full general (not twilight) for my wisdom teeth... had all four removed. I remember being very groggy for awhile afterwards and had to be driven home by a family member. Other than the grogginess, I had no side effects from the anaesthesia, but I understand that it can make some people nauseous.

I've also had a local anaesthetic for a different dental surgery (gingival grafting) and didn't have problems with that either... but I think that depends on how you are personally with being aware of what's going on. I could feel a lot of pressure and could hear everything, but then again, I'm not really squeamish about that sort of thing. The benefit to the local was that there was no recovery time required afterwards except for waiting for the freezing to wear off. I didn't need anybody to accompany me to the surgery since I was fully capable of getting myself home.

I had general when I had all 4 removed at once. They were all impacted, and I was not given a choice on the anesthesia. I don't remember anything. I had no issues with it. My mom drove me home. I was groggy, but not too bad. I did vomit later in the day after the surgery, but I don't know if it was from the anesthesia or the pain meds. It only happened once so it wasn't a huge deal.

General. the roots were twined around the nerves, so the oral surgeon had to crack each tooth and pull them out in pieces.

I actually did a local having all 4 removed at once. I've never been under for anything and didn't think it was necessary. If you feel squeamish, it might not be right for you - I knew everything that was happening but all I felt was a ton of pressure. Recovery was as fine as it coul be for 4 teeth out at once!

I had local and had all four taken out at once. I'm totally a baby and thought it was an pretty easy procedure. After I was numb it took less than five minutes and it was over.

I had two wisdom teeth done at seperate times under local. the first was straightforward, the second was traumatic. my tooth was growing backwards into my jawbone, it had to be drilled in pieces to be removed. it took 8 injections through the surgery to keep the area sufficiently numb, it was long and painful! I wasn't able to do both at the same time as when I removed the first tooth the second was still fairly low and close to a nerve, but within a few years had moved and was impacted. recovery for both surgeries was the same - slightly puffy cheeks, a bit of bruising in my mouth and very sore.

At least two of mine were impacted and one of them was starting to erupt. It was causing lots of problems so they recommended having them removed immediately (I was visiting my family so it was quite unexpected). I can't remember what the deal was with the top two. They weren't erupted yet but I don't remember if they were impacted.
So I was twilighted. I vaguely remember waking a little in the middle and hearing a cracking. BUT because I was so out of it I didn't care, if that makes sense. It was so fuzzy that it wasn't traumatic, it was like a dream. They gave me more anesthesia to put me further under.
So hearing the cracking wasn't traumatic at the time because I was so loopy, BUT it made me very very very glad I wasn't under local.

I had all four done at once with local anesthesia. IIRC, one had partially erupted but they were all considered "soft tissue impaction" -- and the oral surgeon found that one was actually a little more impacted than they'd thought when he was removing it. There was lots of pressure and noise, but I'm not squeamish so it was fine. The worst part was actually one of the Novacain needles, it hurt like hell and the roof of my mouth felt bruised for days.! Recovery was super easy, but I don't know if that had anything to do with the anesthetic or if I just got lucky.

General anesthesia as well. I did not want to be awake and had four removed at once. I'm sooo glad I did that!
