We have an ultrasound for my 2 mo DD tomorrow to explore a possible tethered spinal cord. I thought I would get a call with instructions or what to expect but nothing so far!
Have you ever had to do this or had a similar experience on a small infant? I'm wondering how long it will take and how they get clear images of a baby who will likely be unhappy to be on her tummy?

First of all, I hope everything turns out okay - sounds scary! But to answer your question, my son had a few ultrasounds of his kidneys as a baby and it was super simple and fast. For him it was just like when we got our ultrasounds during pregnancy. She would move a wand around a bit, take a few measurements, and that was it - no more than 10 min each time. He got them every 3 months his first year and he was a bit wiggly, but not too bad. Hopefully its similarly simple and smooth for you.

It really shouldn't be too difficult. The baby won't need to fast, or be sedated, you may even be able to hold her since that would give them easy access to her lower back.

My daughter had a liver ultrasound when she was 2 or 3 months old. Like others have said it was pretty quick and simple. I might recommend wearing something you don’t care about or bring a shirt change...I ended up covered in the gel they use for the ultrasound because I was holding her, and then they pushed on her belly after I had just nursed her so she puked all over me.
I hope everything turns out okay, I know it can be so stressful.

My daughter had ultrasounds on her hips around that age. It was pretty easy for her (and me). It was quick, too!

@Clementine12: my DD had hip ultrasounds too at that age....the dr at the ultrasound disliked babies and was not cool.
But as long as you have someone who likes kids it should be fine.....
If she takes a paci I'd bring that! We were told to have baby chug a bottle but I refused since I was EBF at that point. (Rebel mom) so if she takes a bottle...maybe bring supplies for that just in case....

Just wanted to share my niece had a tethered spinal chord. She did have it released and everything seems to be going well (she’s 3 now and completely normal for all milestones)! The surgery and recovery were very straightforward and quick.

@meadow: oh yikes - we're going to a Children's hospital so surely they like kids? I'll bring a bottle too just in case. Thanks!
@Becky: I haven't let myself consider that possibility yet. She's so small still - I'd be a wreck if a surgery is needed.

We had the hip ultrasound at that age and it was way easier than I thought. Good luck!

@Clementine12: Sending you good thoughts! There was some concern that DS had a tethered spinal cord at birth but the specialist reviewed photos (baby buttcrack photos) and was not concerned enough to have us come in.

So they did end up needing DD to lay completely still (they would've done an x-ray if she couldn't) on her stomach but a little glucose solution on a pacifier and she made it through just fine. Her anatomy looks normal too so today was a very good day!

@Clementine12: Did they send her for the U/S because of a dimple on her back? My daughter was born with one and the rounding NP said it was small enough to be insignificant. BUT my husband keeps mentioning how big it is. I plan on asking at her appointment next week.

@Sams Mom: yes, kind of - my older daughter had a small dimple that they said not to worry about (it was an actual dimple that went away at some point as its gone now). My baby has a y shaped dimple at the top of her bottom - the neurosurgeon said that it would be more worrisome if there was a pad of fat above it if that helps. Apparently a lot of y-shaped dimples go away with weight gain but DD is pretty small still so it was investigated.
I was told that UTIs are the biggest indicator of a problem (more than one with girls, any with boys).
I know a kiddo who had the surgery and his biggest symptom was balance issues when walking - he was under 2 when he had the surgery.
