We did Myrtle Beach, SC last year with our 8 month old DS. Was SO MUCH FUN! Tons to do and see.

We're thinking about doing the Disney resort on Hilton Head this year.

We also did our babymoon to Sanibel/Captiva and mentioend how family friendly it is and will def go back with our kids some day!

what about fire island?

I love SC! I've never been to Myrtle Beach, but I'd love to go - I've vacationed in Charleston and Isle of Palms and absolutely loved it.

We really like the Delaware beaches - Dewey, Rehobeth. Lots of family stuff to do. And it's not usually unbearably hot.

I would also second Charleston and Isle of Palms, but it can be really hot/humid there, for sure.

Following, I've been trying to find something similar. DH's 30th birthday is in August and I'd like to surprise him with something fun. We were originally considering Europe, but he decided he didn't want to spend that much. I was tossing around the ideas of a cruise from Boston to Bermuda, or to Nassau, Bahamas. Or maybe somewhere else on the east coast.

@hellobeeboston: what restaurant is it? I'm from Baltimore. You have to get either steamed crabs or at least a crab cake while you're there. If you have time, go to a little dive restaurant called G&M's. You'll look at it and go, "Really?" But OMG yes. Their crab cakes are divine.

What about Canada? Cape Breton or PEI are gorgeous!

@hellobeeboston: Ha ha, then definitely not a good option!!! I'm from up there--most underrated & beautiful place ever!

Maine: we went to North Haven Island a few years ago and it's pretty cool! I think Deer Isle is supposed to be cool, too? Islands are pretty awesome. I also really like that whole area near Rockland (you get the ferry from Rockland to NHI, and there's a fair amount to do in Rockland)... Wiscasset is also very cute. There are a lot of great places near Acadia--I wouldn't stay in Bar Harbor, but a lot of the small villages near there (Southwest and Northeast Harbor are two... i think?) are really lovely and there's tons of outdoor and indoor stuff to do with Acadia and Bar Harbor nearby. For me the great thing about driving up to Maine from the north shore is that there's so much to do along the way... stop at outlets in Freeport, museum/really good restaurants in Portland, and go to the [awesome] museum at Bowdoin (in Brunswick). So you can break up the trip a little... which is nice with a kid.

@NurseMommy: Agreed about Cape Breton! So gorgeous and some really lovely beaches! Lots to do if you're outdoorsy. Only thing is it's a long drive from MA (we road-tripped it up the Maine coast) and expensive to fly.

I'd do Maine!!!! Ogunquit is an adorable little town... I Don't know much else though. My MOH is from Maine and it's so beautiful up there! I think there is a Bee here who lives in Maine...

Bar Harbor! But it's a long drive from Boston (6ish hours) but definitely worth it once you get there.

@hellobeeboston: Sanibel is gorgeous but will be very hot. I would vote for Hilton Head Island!

@hellobeeboston: I personally haven't been to OBX with kids, but my sister has, and a family I babysit for goes with their kids every summer! I know they have mini golf, playgrounds, etc, but they also have a children's museum, and I believe there's an aquarium somewhere in there too!

@hellobeeboston: I love the outer banks. I don't have kids yet so I can't speak to that, but I've been every summer since I was a kid myself. Stuff that I think kids might like:
- the aquarium
- dolphin watching tour
- jeep tour to see the wild horses
- Jockeys ridge (a giant sand dune) is great for running around and flying kites
- the Wright brothers museum
- the Lost Colony play
- there's a cool boat thing off Manteo
- all the lighthouses

I'm also near Boston, and we rented a house by Lake Winnie for a week in August. Last summer, we rented a house down the Cape for a week. It's a relatively cheap vacation, and we had a blast last year, and I'm totally looking forward to a new destination this summer!

I wouldn't do Maine if you really want a beach vacation. I love a lot about Maine, but the water is always cold, even in the middle of August. You can basically only put your feet in, you can't swim at all without getting totally numb.
