Have you guys heard about this story?!? I think this is totally insane!!
We almost bought a VW tdi wagon a few years back but it was too pricey (and I was worried about the diesel aspect in terms of availability)... So glad we didn't. Crazy!

I meant to post about this yesterday when DH told me about it. It's pretty insane! Did they honestly think they'd get away with it?!

When I heard about this all I could think was wtf. Wouldn't they technically be defrauding all of the states that require emission testing?

@Ms. RV: yes!! It was totally illegal and the fines for that alone are going to be huge...

@hellobeeboston: $35k per car - I believe the fines are in the billions. Just when you think corporate greed can't get worse...

We have a TDI wagon that we got 3 years ago. So far there's no word from VW about what to do. We're not too concerned right now because we live in a county that doesn't do emissions testing, but I'm irritated that whatever the "fix" is will likely reduce our mileage which was a big selling point for the car.

I have been a loyal VW driver since 1999. When I got pregnant, I traded in my Golf for a TDI Jetta Sportwagon. I love diesels, I love manual transmissions, and hatchbacks, so it was a natural choice. The TDI has been a great car, and so much fun to drive.
I'm outraged by this scandal. I want to know how far up it went in the company. Depending on that, I may never by another VW, which is sad because I really love the cars.

I heard on NPR that this isn't the first time VW has rigged their engines to pass emissions tests! I can't find the story right now, but apparently back in the 80s they did something similar. I grew up in VWs, and though I haven't owned one myself in 10 years, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for them. This makes me really sad.

I bought a 2013 Jetta TDI specifically for the "clean diesel" and the fuel economy / performance specs. Now I'm not sure what to do. Do I sue? See what VW will do in trade-in? My resale value has tanked (another part of the incentive to buy it), and I paid more for the car and more for the gas for what turns out to be crap (if I get the software patch to fix it).
I'm also on the crunchy side, so knowing that I'm spewing 40x the pollutants that I thought I would be is awful, but losing the fuel economy and performance pisses me off.
I'm interested to hear what other VW TDI Bee owners are going to do...

BMW supposedly did something similar!

I think maybe a lot of car companies had cheats installed... crazy.

This is absolutely awful. I've always loved VW but never owned one due to the high cost. We considered one when we bought our current car but didn't want to make payments. I'm glad we didn't get the Tiguan.
