Are we talking about a family type place, or a higher end restaurant, because I certainly don't tip the same, it depends on the experience, I suppose.

Try to guess what the customer will need before they ask for it. Extra napkins if they're eating something like wings or crab legs, or have children with them. Stay on top of refills.
Be close by after they get their food. I HATE HATE HATE waiting for my check for 10 minutes after I'm done eating. Huge pet peeve.
Also, act like you like your job even if you don't. Your attitude makes a huge difference!
