For peace of mind, my doctor always let me know that measuring your belly was never a good indicator of how far along you were. Everyone is a different shape and size, and he only ever used an ultrasound to measure growth.

@anandam: I think just a larger than average uterus?? Baby was born full term at 7lbs 9oz, so she didn't end up being that big. I think it's maybe just an inexact measurement. I saw an OB and a endocrinologist for the diabetes and he consistently measured me smaller than the OB by about an inch, so some of it could be technique.

I've measured as much as 8 cm. ahead in two of my pregnancies and in my case, it's never meant a damn thing. Always resolved itself by the time I was full term. My first baby was 7 lb. 9 oz., so not huge, and I haven't had this one hasn't come out yet, but I'm pretty sure the size has nothing to do with how big I was measuring earlier. I didn't have high fluid levels or anything.
