I really like the delay feature on my washing machine...it's made all the difference in being able to do a load and have it completed when I am ready for it.

@MrsBrewer: Tide makes amazing Washing Machine Cleaner packs. They really work! But yeah, it continues to come back every few months. I just keep a bunch of them on hand.

@LemonJack: I just got this washing machine for our beach house rental when the old one broke. But we only had 3 weeks left on our lease (it was a full year lease) so I only used it for 2-3 weeks. But it was great for those couple of weeks! I loved it!

Oh and ETA: I think I agree with top loaders being the way to go. Front loaders look nice and everything, but I've been using both for the last year (front loader at our main home and top loader at our 2nd) and I much preferred the top loader! The old one only broke because it was 20+ years old and it was the first and only issue had with that machine. But over the years I've had issues with every front loader we've had (three different ones in three different apartments).

@MrsBrewer: They smell so good and are pretty strong. I personally like that but I know some people are sensitive to strong detergent smells. Your whole apartment or floor that the machine is on will fill with the smell for a day or two. And the first few loads of laundry will smell like it despite using your own detergent. But again, it smells great, in my opinion.

ETA: I think there's another brand called afresh? But I've never tried them.

Oh and a little off topic, but occasionally my dishwasher gets a yucky smell too. I get these Finish dishwasher cleaners that are awesome as well.

@MrsBrewer: You could probably also just run it a few times on the hottest cycle while empty to get the extra cleaner out.

@LemonJack: we occasionally have the smell issue, but if I remember to leave the washer door open after I take everything out, then it's no problem.

@LemonJack: I know! I mean, I guess nothing you can't solve with a stool, but still.

We have the same Maytag as @SweetiePie. We bought it in May and I run about 1 load per day, often of really dirty stuff--we garden and play hard in dirt/sand/water. Even using the "environmentally friendly" HE detergent, it works well. I'm very happy with it and I really like the see-through lid.

I didn't know there were issues with a front loader. We also just leave the door open and haven't had any issues. I thought top loaders used too much water?
