We are moving into a new house this week that has front loading high efficiency washer and dryer. I've always wanted this, but I really don't want to deal with mold and it's a tiny room so I don't really want to keep the door open all the time. Should we just swap ten with our fairly new fairly good washer and dryer at our current house?

I can't wait to get rid of my front loader! It's a pain to keep mold free. Next time I move I'm going to get a HE top loading washer and dryer.

I love my top loader washer and regular dryer and have no desire for fancy front loaders. They're durable and get the job done. It seems like the more bells and whistles, the greater the chance of something going wrong. That's just me, though!

Having spent all morning trying to get the mold out of my washer because someone never remembers to keep the door open, I say get rid of the front loader!!!

I hate that mine is front loading. It's nice and small and takes up very little space in our condo, but it's in a closet in the main living room so it's impossible to leave it open, so it's always gross. It was a stupid choice on the builders part, but since it's here and it works, I'm stuck with it. If I could swap it with another good washer for almost no cost, I would in a second.

I really like my Front Loader. We have a samsung we bought when we got our house about 5 years ago. I've cleaned the mold out maybe like all of 10 times total. And we used Cloth Diapers.
When people say leave the door open, we just can't push it all the way shut for where the seal closes. As long as its just ajar it dries.

We hated our front loader! We love our top loader.

I hate the front loader that came with our house and wish we would have kept our old set. It doesn't clean the clothes as well in addition to the mold issue.

@raintreebee: my lo is obsessed with closing things so I think he'll be upset when it's open! @T.H.O.U.: this one already had visible mold which is gross because it's not ours. And the door swings wide open, not just barely. It's an LG Tromm.

I love our front loader - never had a mold problem in 6 yrs - if I cant leave it all the way open I throw a towel on the door so it wont close all the way and its fine
But.... if you hate it then switch them!

If I had to do it again, I would get a top loader without an agitator. I like my front loader, but not in my particular laundry room.

We bought our house in March and the previous owners had a front loader. I was excited at first but then I realized that they never kept up with cleaning it and it was gross. It started leaking over the weekend so we purchased an LG top loader.

@Mrs Green Grass: ours had visible mold too when we moved in. It's a rental, and we are moving soon--otherwise I'd get rid of it. Anyway, it has been a disaster! It especially makes me nervous with washing clothing for young kids.
Also, I am pregnant, and it hurts my back to lean over and get stuff out of it! Another reason for the top loader!

We got a new HE top loader (the ones without the agitator) a few months ago. LOVE it! My mom has a front loader and has constant issues with the mold. Ours is a Samsung and it works great!

We have front loaders (8 years and counting) and don't have an issue with mold. However, we do keep it open for a bit after every wash to air out.

I hate our front loading washing machine and will be getting a top loader someday soon I hope. Ours came with our house too and I was excited at first... Until it started stinking and collecting mold...

We've only had ours for 7 months but no issues with mold here! We keep a rag on a hook to wipe down if we're not doing multiple loads.

I would switch, I'm so glad I didn't give into the "fad" of the front loader and got an HE top loader!

I'm so glad you asked this! We plan on purchasing a new washer and dryer before the end of the year and I was trying to decide. Guess I'm sticking with a top loader!

i am glad to see this post too! i am (was?) planning to get a front loader washer and dryer so i can hopefully stack them too. I had no idea it was more susceptible to mold!

We have a nice set of front-loading washer/dryer and haven’t had a mold problem in the 2 years we’ve had them. That said, I find the front loading part to be a PITA and would rather have a top-loader. Since there is nothing wrong with these, they are under warranty for 10 years and they are beautiful (haha, they are totally pretty and blue colored), I’ll stick with them, but next time we’ll probably get top-loaders.

We have a front-loader, and I really like it. We do keep the door open when not in use, and we've only had to clean out the seal once or twice since we put it in (a few years ago). I like that LO can help load the washer because she can reach it. But if you don't like the front-loader, then replace it! Do what you want to do!

My front loader washer is by far my most favorite appliance in our house, but I also have a laundry room where I can keep the door open all of the time. LO will randomly walk by it and close it, but I just open it back up and explain to him that it gets stinky if we don't leave it open to dry.
"Oh...ok, Mommy!"
He still likes to close it, but we've never had a mold issue in our 6 years at our house!

I have a Miele front loader, never had a mold issue in the last 7 years I've been using it. I leave the door slightly ajar to dry after use, and then it doesn't matter if it gets closed once dry.

We got rid of our front loader and got a new HE top loader. The front loader was such a pain BC it would leak water in middle of the cycle every now and then. It also always had this musty smell even though I would leave the door open for hours after each cycle. Love the new top loader.

I've never been a front load fan and recently found out they're a huge mold issuer. Definitely swap!

For those of you who don't like bending over to get in the front loaders, do you have them on pedestals? I'm really short, so I wonder if having them on pedestals would actually be easier for me to reach.

@CaliforniaDreams: You can stack a top loader if you get the right kind. An apartment that I had a few years back had them stacked in a utilities closet off my bedroom. Very nice. The only thing is that the hatch only opened at a 45 degree angle, and wasn't as large, so if I had a big winter duvet in there, it kind of needed to be manoeuvred out.
I've only had mold once, in several years, and I've only recently started leaving it open slightly. I have cats, so I always worried that they'd jump in.

I love our front loader. You don't have to leave the door totally open, just ajar.

We have had our front loaders for over 5 years and we have never had a single mold issue. I love them!

I'm short so I prefer front loader to top loaders. We have a laundry room so it's not a problem to leave the machine door ajar to let things dry.

I haven't had mold issues yet and we've had our front loader for 2+ yrs... I just keep the door open when not in use. I feel like I can't reach all the way down to get stuff if I have a top loader?!

I'm just wondering if there is already a mold issue, will it persist? Either way I'll have to clean it because it will go in one house or the other...

@Mrs Green Grass: from my experience, yes, it will persist. i have tried bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and affresh. although it seems to subside for awhile after I clean it, i still haven't won the war.

@Mrs.ThinMint: ours are on pedestals and it makes them the perfect height for me - I never bend!
