Yesterday our sweet, precious 4 year old dachshund lost control of her back legs. Turns out she had a herniated disc that ruptured this morning. Medication isn't a long term option because it will kill her liver & kidneys & we can't afford the surgery she needs. I am so so devastated. She was my first baby, the best big sister, my running buddy, my kitchen vacuum (lol), my cuddle buddy & best friend. I can't name how many times I sent up a special prayer of thanks to God for blessing us with such a precious & good puppy. She really was my special little love. I'm going to miss her so desperately.

I am so sorry. I was not a pet person until we got our kittens less than a year ago, and I cannot believe how attached I am. I can only imagine how sad you must be feeling. My thoughts are with you.

I'm so sorry! I do know how you feel. Our seven year old Bernese Mountain Dog has a sudden and horrible hemolytic anemia and is not predicted to survive the week. He also was around before our girls and was our first baby which makes it so much harder.

I am so sorry. Our pup will be four on Friday and the idea of losing him breaks my heart everytime I think of it. And like you I pray daily thanking God for blessing me with him as he's helped me through such horrible times. Please find peace and comfort in the fact that you have loved her and given her an amazing life. I know it's hard but be happy you have a chance to say goodbye. Our family dog (4 year old great dane) died suddenly 2 years ago and it was beyond heartbreaking knowing I didn't get to be there.
I will say a prayer for your pup, you and your family. Our Coop down is sending loving drool.

@FliegepilzHut: we think it's vaccine induced. He got a clean bill of health two weeks prior to his collapse. Our vet said he was a seven year old looking like a three year old. He got a bunch of vaccines that day and a dental cleaning and was never really the same after that. Just dwindled until he bled down to a PCV of 20. He's a Berner so histiocytosis was highest on the differential. Last week he got a bone marrow, liver and spleen biopsies. All came back clean (except for hepatic changes consistent with his anorexia).
He started on prednisone and azathioprine last week, but imuran takes so long to kick in. Friday he was transfused four units of blood and one liter of fluid. We hoped we could get him to make it through the first two weeks of illness to see if he could start pumping out reticulocytes and platelet. After 4 transfusions his PCV was 22 :(. His platelets are currently 14, so if he gets a stress gastritis or any bump, he's likely to bleed out.
He won't eat anything and has lost 35 lbs in a week. We thought about cyclosporine, but there's not a great evidence base for it and if we could get IVIG we would have done it, but we can't get it.
We're just trying to spoon feed him broth and water in the hopes of getting him through until the azathioprine kicks in.
