Like Yin, we also loved Ella... but it's so popular lately, we didn't go with it.

We picked Olivia for my daughter even though it's so popular. We mostly call her Lily which is pretty popular, too. Hey, we like what we like ...

I love the name Emma, but EVERYONE has it. Also, Grace is another one that is all over everybody.

I really like Kate but was worried with the royal wedding that it would be a really popular name right now. We are having a boy so I get to pocket this name for a few more years when hopefully the hype has gone down.
persimmon / 1194 posts
I liked Mylie but then Mylie Cyrus became popular and everyone I knew began naming their girls Mylie. I also liked Bella and then Twilight came out -- oy!

We've both really liked Emily Marie for a few years, but a friend of ours had a daughter and named her that, so we won't be using that name. Our next one is Amelia Marie, which is pretty close.

I love Oliver, but it's the number one boy's name in the UK right now. Blah! I still haven't completely ruled it out.

Ella, Emily and Jacob. My husband is in love with the name Emily. I showed him the baby names directory online and now he's trying to find names that aren't in the top 10.

My hubs used to have a 'requirement' that his future wife let him name his kid Connor. Which is a lovely name, but neither one of us is Irish and was too popular in the 90's.
The hard part about where we live is that names that don't seem that popular are totally trending. So whereas five years ago you wouldn't have ever heard of a Lincoln or an Asher, now there will be at least three of them in our son's class.

I think my goal for a girl will be to be in the top 250 but not the top 25. My name was #20 the year I was born, and there was often another Rachel in my class. Boy names I'm a little more flexible with the popularity. It's so frustrating when you find a name you think is unique and then it seems like everyone in the world finds it at the same time!

We really like Kaden for a boy but then all the "aiden" names became super popular that we decided against it. I have since met a ton of Aidens, a few Kadens and some Jaydens so I am glad we didn't go with it.
I hadn't heard my son's name on any little kids until he was born and then I met 3 or 4 within the first 6 months! Not much we can do about that though!!

I loved the name Addison for a girl, but it is way to popular for us. And two of our friends have named their daughters Madison..to close for us!

Emma, Ella, Olivia, Sophia, Emily, Lily are all names I think are adorable but huge no-go's. I hated having a popular name and won't do that to my kids, no matter how much I love it.

I had been set on Chloe forever...and then it became one of the top 10 most popular names.

I love the name Noah. So far the popularity of it has not steered me away but I am a little hmm about it.
coffee bean / 28 posts
We love Jack, and will probably use it even though it's popular. He'll be named after his grandfather and two of his great-grandfathers! That means more to me than the current popularity of the name.

Olivia has always been one of my favorites and we both really love Madison too. Oh well!

My DH does not like most popular names... well the modern ones. He likes classic names, like James and Elizabeth.
coconut / 8299 posts
@bluestriped bee: Oooh, I love the classic names. LOVE both James and Elizabeth. Henry was one of out top picks for boy names but we're having a girl so it's back to the drawing board for us.

@tequiero21: hahah Ditto. Both my husband and I really liked Sophia.

I used to love Sophia, but somone close to me used it so that's out.

Isabella and Sophia are great names but WAY too popular for me unfortunately!

Since I started dating the hubs, we always loved MIA for a girl name. But then when we actually got pregnant (with a girl) MIA became too popular so we switched.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
Sophia was our top choice but became too popular :(. I still love that name. Olivia was also a favorite but people we knew used that name so it was out. I am ok with popular names but it's hard when so many people around you have babies with the same name.

I always liked the name Avery, but it has become super popular in our area, as well as Mason, Aubrey, Ella, Layla, Kyler, and Easton.
Fingers crossed our names don't become too popular, they are both out of the top 100 right now.
pomegranate / 3225 posts
I like Ava and Sophia, Olivia, and aiden, which are all way too popular. My husband wants LO to be the only one with their name, so we are going with the obscure.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
our top name choices are Emma, Olivia and Molly. We don't know anyone with any of those 3 names! (Well - one Emma and one Olivia but they're teenagers!)

@highwire: Me too! DH and I had picked Chloe long before TTC. I was so sure that would be my daughter's name... and yet we're opting for a plan b now.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
We liked Chloe too! But then it being in the top 10 and Dance Moms totally ruined it for us. Too bad because it sounds really cute with our last name.
coconut / 8299 posts
We really liked Ella and Kayla. And for a while, I really liked Caitlin. I wouldn't mind naming our daughter a popular name but our friends have all used these names so they're off our list.
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
When DH and I were first dating we'd talk about names a lot. We loved Emma.... now its so popular. I've had 4 students in the past 2 years named Emma (they were 3-4 years old).
I also LOVE Ellie, but its really close to Ella which of course is really popular right now.

I loved Madeline but with all the Madi's around I just couldn't use it. Plus, my neice is a Madi.
Other names include: Noah, Oliver, Mason, Charlotte and Amelia.

For years I had planned on using my maiden name for a girl thinking it would be a sweet nod to my parents and a great name for a girl that wasn't very common at all. Fast forward a few years and a certain famous soccer player and his pop star wife had to go and name their daughter the exact same name sparking a huge trend and therefore making my maiden name lose it's appeal. I never have been much of a soccer fan...

Olivia is on my list but I am really struggling with it as it is so popular. I love Livi for a nickname. Sophie is another popular one that I love. I worked with a girl who's sister named her daughter Ava-Sophia and called her Sophie. I suppose I could use it now that I no longer work with that girl.
Girls names are so hard!
pomegranate / 3053 posts
I wish popular names was our problem naming our two sons. It was more that our close friends gave their boys the names we both liked. Just didn't feel right to give our sons the same name...just in case someone gets upset about it.

We really liked Harper, but it is a bit too popular for me. Same with Norah and Hazel.
persimmon / 1202 posts
Sophia. Specifically, Anne Sophia. But my aunt tried to name her adopted daughter Anna Sofia (Maija was 2 by the time my aunt actually adopted her.) So it was kind of taken, aside from being ridiculously popular.

It's funny how certain names are popular in one area. We live in Massachusetts and loved Declan for a boy. It's in the top 100 in one state - Massachusetts!
