None of the hospitals in my area even have a nursery besides NICU/Special Care

Immediately after LO's birth, we had a private hour together where no one - not even nurses or doctors came into the room (unless we needed something). That was the standard practice at our hospital. They had a nursery but it was 100% my discretion whether she went there or not, for how long, etc.

The place I gave birth doesn't even have a nursery. Baby is observed, vaccinated (if you so choose), and tested in your room. Baby also eats, sleeps, and sh*ts in your room. They never leave your side!!

Rooming in is highly encouraged at my hospital. I think they only take the baby for testing, or if you ask for them to be brought to the nursery.

I'm in TN, and they only took baby for a few minutes at a time after giving us two hours alone. He was never gone for more than 5-10 minutes!

I don't think hospitals here even have nurseries?

they tell you (at my hospital anyway) that you can send your baby to hang out with the nurses and midwives on the floor if you need a break for an hour or so, but other than that...

i had LO with me my entire hospital stay. any checking on baby they do in your room

Mine was basically the same as @kiddosc. But you could choose to keep baby for the cleaning etc. or send them to nursery for it.

Hospitals here don't even have nurseries other than Special Care nursery and NICU. The baby never leaves your side, even testing is done in the room next to you. The midwives come and check on you every two to three hours and you have call buttons if you need them between those visits.

Same as some, none of the hospitals in my area have a routine nursery. If your baby needs nicu care, then ok. But sending them to the nursery like this or for overnights is being phased out in more progressive areas, as far as I can tell.

My hospital does "rooming in" where the whole family stays together in a private room unless there is a problem. They don't have a nursery, only have a NICU for sick or preemie babies. We did unfortunately have to use that due to high bilirubin for several days, but that didn't start until he was a little over 24 hours old.

I would NOT be ok with a 4 hour observation time away from mom unless it was for a medical issue.

I had an unplanned c-section and DD never left our sight. They had a NICU team on hand just because it's standard practice for all operative births, but they weren't needed. DH went with her into the little side room where she was weighed and then she was handed over to him immediately. As soon as I was stitched up we started skin-to-skin and nursing.

@Penny Lane: my wee girl hung out with the midwives for a few hours on our first night so I could get some sleep.

We had some time to ourselves, then she was taken for a bath and weighing etc in the nursery. It was shift change so the babies there are always in the nursery for that too. DH was with her except for the shift change reporting.

I'm still SO glad our hospital had a nursery. Dd was not a sleepy newborn.. She screamed every time I unlaced her (after a LONG time nursing, up to 1:30 or 1:45) and could not be soothed because she just wanted to suck suck suck. They finally came and got her at like 4am both nights and I had been up at least on and off the 3 nights before that with contractions. It was a lifesaver! I have no idea how they got her to sleep.

LO was taken to the nursery for a couple hours. I wasn't too pleased, but for the first hour or so after my c section I was in too much pain anyways. We've had her rooming in half the time and in the nursery half the time since then.
