I'm a member of a birth-centered facebook group that's based in Mississippi. There was a post today about how most hospitals in Jackson don't allow private transition, which I didn't even know what that was. Come to find out, the hospitals require every baby to have a 4 hour observation period in the nursery after being transferred out of Labor & Delivery and before going to the mom's room in Mother & Baby.

This seems so crazy to me! I would've freaked out on somebody if they told me I wasn't allowed to keep my baby with me, especially almost immediately after birth. I gave birth at a "Baby Friendly" hospital, and they didn't even have a nursery, so it wasn't an issue for me. Thank goodness.

Did your hospital do this? Is this a common practice? Or were you able to have a private transition to your room with the baby?

ETA: just found out that, at at least one hospital, you can pay extra (my source says $400!) for a private transition. That. is. nuts.
