I considered it, but in the end I decided to do my own thing. I wish there were nerdier fraternities, in which case I would have joined. Sad but true.
Did you join the Greek system in college?

No, because I attended three different schools in four years.

No. Some schools basically require it to have any kind of social life, but my university wasn't like that.

No, I don't think I would have fit in, unless I joined the one Asian sorority but I didn't want to do that.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
We didn't have a Greek system, which I was kind of glad about. I couldn't see myself getting into it, but also didn't want to be left out!

No. Where I went to school, it wasn't necessary. I still went to the frat parties and stuff. It just never seemed worth it to me.
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
Nope. I went to a huge state school that had a big greek system, but there were LOTS of fun people that weren't in it. So I didn't bother.

No Greek system at my school. I guess the equivalent was the Mods (senior housing, these gross little houses in one part of campus and there were crazy parties all the time... you couldn't even get in to the area if you weren't a senior... they had a fence all around with guards at each opening, checking IDs). Never lived in the Mods and only went to one Mod party my senior year.

Nope, never even considered it! I went to a small college that had local sororities/fraternities instead of national ones, and a lot of people joined but it's just not my cup of tea.
pomegranate / 3204 posts
No! I went to a smaller university and it wasn't necessary to do. I couldn't stand the girls in the sororities, you pretty much knew everyone regardless. If I had went to a bigger university I probably would've joined.

I did!
I went to a large state school in a different state so I did it so I could meet people my first year. Plus in the high school I came from, everybody did it. There were parts that were fun and I liked living in the big, beautiful house on the lake. But mostly I hated it. I'm really not much of a conformist and I found the Greek system to be sort of high schoolish.

I didn't but I have lots of friends who enjoyed their Greek experience!

Wow, I'd love to see a poll on this since it seems like a lot of people weren't in the greek system!
I was a Delta Gamma. A friend of mine dragged me from our school radio gig one day to a pledge event (she was a sister) and convinced me the sorority at our school was "weird" enough for me to want to join. By weird I just mean, not everyone was your stereotypical sorority girl.

Nope. I rushed but quit on the 5th day. Was not for me, though I did get 2 bids even though I quit. It just seemed to clique-y and was so expensive.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
I did and it was a wonderful experience! I also attended a 'nerdier' school so I know it was very different on my campus as opposed to other places. I likely would not have rushed elsewhere.
It was a fraction of the cost to go Greek, too. I paid $1600/semester for room/food/board/everything. Compared to 5K. Amazing.
My campus was 25% Greek, so it was a HUGE part of our campus!

Nope, even though I went to a Big 10 school and there were a zillion frats/sororities.

Didn't join, but wanted to. Greek Life is huge at my alma mater. Wayyyy too expensive for me though!
grapefruit / 4819 posts
I did. I went to a huge school with a very active Greek community and knew I wanted to rush from the start. I was super involved in my sorority, and the Greek system as a whole, and really, really enjoyed it.
Now, more than ten years removed, I think it was all quite silly. I don't regret joining but I don't consider myself a lifelong member. I don't celebrate founder's day, I don't go back for homecoming, and I'm really not nostalgic for rhose days at all. It was fun at the time but it's over and done now.

@sweetchic: I was Big 10 too! Which school, if you don't mind my asking?
grapefruit / 4819 posts
@sweetchic: Me too!!! Too funny! What year did you graduate? I finished in '01 but stayed there for another two years to get my masters.

No, not my scene at all. My freshman roommate joined a sorority and for a very short period of time, I was a little jealous of all her new "friends," but then I found out that it cost at least five grand per year! Ridiculous.

@Ree723: Nice, I was there 98 - 02!! It looks sooo different there now, I wish it was as fancy back in our day!
grapefruit / 4136 posts
No, I wasn't in a sorority, I pledged but ended up dropping the day of initiation because I was transfering schools at the end of the semester and my new school didn't have the same house. I wanted to be able to pledge at another house, but the new school had a totally different kind of greek system, it was like what you see in movies with the bitchy girls and that's not what I wanted to be around, it was totally different from the previous school that was only 45 min away! I did end up partying at frats a ton though

I knew this would come up today after the keg stand question!
Yes, I was (am!) a Delta Zeta.

Yup! I'm a Kappa Kappa Gamma. It was an awesome experience for me. Because of the laws of the county my school was in we didn't have actual sorority houses which meant the dues were much less and I continued to live with my best friends who were in different sororities. Greek life was huge on my campus. But not a requirement, hubs never went Greek because he payed football and rush was during the season.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
Nope. I was too poor. My parents couldn't have afforded the dues/fees, and I would have had to pay for it myself.
coconut / 8498 posts
Nope. The Greek system at my school was large, but it wasn't necessary for social life. I had lots of friends that were Greek and lots that weren't.
honeydew / 7687 posts
Nope, sororities did not appeal to me. My husband was in a fraternity (and we met in college) so I did get to have fun at the parties and formals still. At least at my school the fraternities did more fun things than the sororities did (and cost less!)
