We didn't. Worst decision we have ever made. Awesome house, cruddy schools.
We bought 5 years ago.

Yes! We were planning on staying our condo a bit longer after LO was born and then buying a kid-friendly house in a good neighborhood/town. But our horrible condo neighbors helped us decide to move a few years early. Now we have a house with a yard in the suburbs. Yay, kind of!

Yup! We picked this area because it's in the catchment area for the schools we liked - we actually went online and read OFSTED (the regulatory body in the UK) reports in order to choose the schools we liked....

Yes. both in terms of what would work for our family - 3 BR, at least 1.5 baths, a living room AND a family space - and not choosing schools that would be too far away for my in-laws to pick them up if needed.

Considering we aren't planning to buy a home until after we have at least 1 maybe 2 kids, yes, we will be thinking about them! But I couldn't imagine not anyway-- neither of us ever planned to buy a home particularly young, so we knew we would eventually have kids that would go to school.
That said, we aren't totally against a house that doesn't have great public schools but has a very good private option nearby. It wouldn't be our first choice but we aren't ruling that out. Not house hunting for another 2 years at least though.

We bought our house because we got pregnant, so yes.
That definitely geared our house hunting towards concerns like the school district, proximity to family, a good neighborhood, and having room to grow.
We ended up buying a house that fit the bill beautifully, even though it was very messy and shabby looking...we sacrificed finishes/upgrades/DIY.

Yes. We have great schools. Unfortunately, we were only thinking about one child...now our house is too small.

Yes, totally! That's the only reason we bought our place...great school district! We could've purchased a bigger, nicer home in a different city but opted to downgrade the home for the better schools.

DH wasn't thinking about kids when he bought our 3 floor condo!

We thought about all sorts of stuff. Kids weren't in the forefront but we definitely avoided homes that'd be too little, or in a bad spot of town to be good for kids...

The only thing we didn't really think about was the bedroom configuration. There's only 2 bedrooms upstairs, but 3 bedrooms downstairs. It's a pretty minor flaw, though. When the kids are older, it'll be great. We'll have one floor and they will have another!!

Yep! We started house hunting right after we started TTC. The first time we walked through out house I had the room for the nursery picked out.

I bought my house before I ever met my SO. I won't say it was a deciding factor, but we're in a very good school district -- I bought it more for the resale value at the time, and a "well, just in case...".
Who would have thought that I'd buy a 3 bedroom (with an option to turn it into a 4 bedroom) twin as a single woman and then meet my SO who has two children of his own? So now we converted the third floor into my DSS's bedroom, my DSD has one on the second floor, and the guest bedroom will become the nursery :).

Nope! We were way far from thinking about kids, so it wasn't a concern. We still may move before any kid we have is 5yo, but I do love this neighborhood. Also, the elementary school that we back up to reopened recently.
I have friends that put their house up for sale within a few weeks of their baby being born though, because their house is so tough! I can't imagine packing up and moving with a newborn...

Yep, it was a huge factor. We wanted a good school district, and a big enough backyard to run around in
The house we ended up picking has this glorious, tree-filled back yard that I thought would be just amazing to have as a kid! It also has a view of the 'castle' at the neighborhood entrance.

Yepp! I was 6 months pregnant when we bought
We made sure we were in a good school district, we're less than 15 minutes away from all grandparents and we're in a really safe area.

DEFINITELY considered schools and # of rooms when we bought this house. It backs right up to a middle school, elementary school, and interior park! DH was so happy, he always says we can toss our kids over the wall for school!
One thing I didn't think about as much was to get a space with a designated "playroom" or "play area". Though, that is harder to get in an older construction around here.

Nope, but the real estate did mention it was in a great school district for when the time comes.

Yes, but not as much as I wish I had been. We bought a three-bedroom house because we knew we wanted two kids, but the bedrooms are totally different sizes, which I wish I had thought about before-hand.

yep - we were thinking about it. I SO hope that someday there are kids in our home to enjoy the little jack-n-jill bathroom between the adjoining rooms...and I look forward to walking the kids to school. The elementary school I hope our kids attend is footsteps away from our front door.

We did, but knew that our condo wouldn't be our long term home. We bought knowing that we would likely have a baby/toddler at our condo but that we'd be moving when he/she was 1 or 2. The school system where we live is amazing but there's no way we could afford a single family home here!
blogger / persimmon / 1220 posts
Nope.
We have the opposite problem. House is 2-story with a tiny living room so it's not great for kids, but we live in a great school district.

Yes, but we were house hunting with a LO and a LO on the way.

Definitely. We bought because I was pregnant. Otherwise we would have waited a couple of years.

Well, we are TTC right now and looking for homes so we are thinking of kids as we search.
pomelo / 5132 posts
Yes! The schools were a top priority, as was the number of bedrooms. Now we just need some kids to fill them!
