Yup! I think my grandma hired a wet nurse for some of her kids.

Yep, though ironically my brother and i were mostly formula fed after the first few months!

Not my mom and I'm not sure about my dad but probably not. Amazing that your grandma nursed 14 kids!!!

Nope, formula was a big push for them because breastfeeding was seen as 'sexual'. My mom did with us though and was very supportive of me when I was struggling.

my mom was not. my grandma had the directions from the hospital in her baby book and they had formula mixing directions and instructions to give orange juice starting at 4 weeks! craziness! i think my nana breastfed my dad even though it was frowned upon, she was kind of a rebel, lol, not sure for how long though.

I don't know about my dad, but my mom I know was not. I talked to my grandma about it a couple weeks ago and her doctor told her it wasn't necessary after the first 3 months, so that's how long she lasted with my aunt. With her next two, she didn't bother to bf at all. She said they gave her a pill and bound her breasts to stop the milk and said that was worse than labor!
My mom was fed condensed milk + caro syrup!! Oh how things have changed....

@Bookish: My mom was fed condensed milk and kayro syrup, as well. My grandma said that's what the doctor recommended. .

I think no for both my parents. I know my mom has said her mother was told she couldn't breastfeed successfully (but I think that was much more about the atmosphere in the 1950s than any physical reality).

I don't think either of my parents were-- I know for sure my mom wasn't, and I don't think my dad was, either. I think condensed milk + water was big as "formula" in Vietnam in the 40s and 50s...

My father was for sure, not sure about mother...but if I had to guess I would say no.

No! Formula was a big thing in the 1950's. All 8 of my aunts and uncles were formula fed too.

Oh my, I have no idea! And have no grandparents left to ask Which is sad. I know none of us kids were breastfed past 6 months, though. My older brother only for 6 weeks.

14 kids?! Wow!
I have no clue about my dad but I think my mom was formula fed.

I just texted her - haha - she said no!
My mom had her 1st 2 kids in 1967 and 1970 and she said NONE of her friends nursed - everyone used formula.
Then in 1973 when she had my brother she met a woman who encouraged her to nurse and so she ended up nursing him and then me

That's amazing! 14 kids!
My mom was breastfed, but I'm not sure for how long. My dad was not.

My grandma said she breastfed all 7 of her kids, but I don't know for how long. I have no idea about my dad's mom.

Don't know about my dad, but I know my mom, and her siblings, were not. The doctors told my grandmother not to and the attitude was basically that formula is better and only poor people who couldn't afford it would breastfeed. And my grandparents were far from rich.

No idea about my dad. My grandma died when he was in high school, so no telling. I don't think my mom was.
I don't know what my mom did with my brothers, but I know BFed and supplemented me until 14 months.

I think my dad was...my grandmother really advocated for it with me and my cousins when ours were born.
I don't know about my mom, though. I'm under the impression that she probably wasn't. I'm having lunch with my mom later, so I'll bring it up, lol

I don't think my mom was. My mom has mentioned that my grandma was not supportive of her trying to breastfeed us and didn't understand why she wouldn't just use formula. I imagine my dad was. My grandma was pretty farm-wife-ish and also broke so I would bet she breastfed all her kids.

I know that my dad was breastfed. I would guess that my mom was formula fed but I'm not sure.
