Nope! But I bet your kids would think it was cool if you tried to keep Korean traditions alive, at least somewhat. My grandpa was 2nd generation immigrant, his parents having come over shortly before they had him with their parents. When he was a kid he grew up speaking their language and with their traditions but as he got older his parents assimilated and stopped speaking anything but english at home. By the time his grandkids were around he couldn't even remember his parents language and there was really nothing he maintained from his parents' culture. I always thought it was sort of sad that he completely lost all of that.

mine were not, SO's were. it's interesting how their parenting changed the longer they'd been here. they had my husband shortly after they came here, then he had 2 younger siblings. the youngest of which has the most americanized upbringing.

Yes my parents came here for college and stayed to live and work and raise a family (me) Im the first generation born here but DH's family has been here since the Mayflower so I tend to do more American traditions than Chinese ones these days

My parents were immigrants from Korea as well, but their parents were immigrants from China. Growing up we were more exposed to the Chinese culture/traditions/values and later through church the Korean culture I feel like my parents did a pretty good job in incorporating some of the american holidays/tradition with a mix of our own. IE thanksgiving was complete with Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, but with a side of Kim chee, chinese dumplings, Korean Kim Bop. (And yes our tummy's were spoiled with such great food)

My parents have become more "americanized" over the years and sadly, I feel like my kids may not be as exposed to their heritage like I have. Also my DH is Irish/Czech and everything in between. I have a stance on introducing our heritage, but allowing them to explore as they would like.

Nope, nothing all that exciting here- we lack cool second languages and delicious food. My husband was excited to be connected to the Mayflower when he married me... his family missed the boat

DH's parents were, he's the only one in his family that was born here and didn't know any family other than his parents and brother.
They're Dutch-Indonesian. He never really celebrated any holidays other than Christmas.

No but DH's parents are. It creates a lot of tension for him because his mother pulls the "I don't understand English" card when she doesn't get her way or when she starts drama. DH tells her it's not an excuse because she's been in America for 30+ years and speaks in English to all her children and at work.

Nope. DHs family has been in the US less than 100 years, his grandparents are first generation Americans. My family has, mostly, been in the states since the colonial era (we were Jamestown colonists!) I can see the differences in family culture just between my family and his, so I can imagine how much different it would be if our grandparents or parents were immigrants.

No. My family has been here for hundreds of years. DH's grandfather immigrated from Lithuania. He was 2 at the time.

Yup! But my dad is pretty up to speed and Americanized! Heck, he's more tech savvy then I am. *face palm*. We still lots of Chinese stuff, but they're not crazy superstitious. When we planned our wedding, they didn't care if we implemented Chinese stuff in it or not (we did because I wanted to).

My parents and grandparents were all born here, but both of my grandmothers' sets of parents immigrated from Germany in the early 1900s. They were the most recent immigrants on my side of the family. My DH is an immigrant to the US, though, and most of his family still lives in the country where he was born.

My dad was and my mom was first generation here. It's really interesting to talk to people who have had family here for quite a while, but overall our family has adopted all of the US holidays.

Nope. My family immigrated here at some point (well half. I'm part Native American) but it was so far back we have no records of it. We are not even 100% sure where we come from. Somewhere in Europe...probably Ireland but after a little digging I'm thinking now it may have been England.

It makes me sad That I don't know about my heritage except for my Native American background...and that comes from my mom's dad's family who we don't even associate with.

My mom's family has been here forever. I have a relative who signed the declaration of independance.

My dad's parents were both immigrants from Greece. They both died before I was born which makes me really sad. I would have loved to hear their stories first hand.

Nope. Most of my family has been in the US since the early 1800s (my mom's side is Native American too). We don't even have any Ellis Island records because they immigrated before it was open!

DH's family came in the late 1800s I believe.

Most of my family and DH's family came in the late 1800s/early 1900s. We still like to try to incorporate some nods to our cultural heritages, though!

No but I am. I moved here from Europe in my 20's, since having LO I have become much more aware of incorporating traditions from home and getting my LO a European passport and generally making him aware of his roots.

Yes, and I was also born aboard and moved to the States at a young age. Growing up, my parents made it a point to only talk to me in Tagalog (Filipino) at home. We celebrated American holidays, but it took awhile before my mom could figure out how to cook a turkey. Christmas was the biggest holiday for us - I was brought up Catholic and they're used to much larger festivities back in their hometown. Plus, my father designed/invented Christmas lights and our house was always lit up.
