I need some good boots for when I'm mucking around in the woods behind our house or know we will be walking through something I don't want to slosh through in sneakers. I don't really like the ever popular Hunter boots. I'm looking for something more substantial, possibly with some arch support for short hikes.

I really like my 6" Bean boots, but they're hard to find this time of year. Sperry and Sorel some similar types of duck boots.

I'm wearing the sperrys right now. They are super comfortable and lined nicely.Downside is the rubber only comes up to the ankle like other duck boots, but i have yet to wear them in extreme muck past that. Snow brushes right off. They are the "sperry saltwater quilted rainboot". I've walked miles in them. I'm a 7.5/8 and I'm wearing an 8.
I also have hunters. Not a fan, never wear them any more except in torrential downpours or floods. Not comfortable despite my best efforts putting inserts in.
Ugg also makes some surprisingly comfortable and weather resistant boots. I have some waterproof/shearling lined boots which have held up incredibly well, and are warm and comfortable. -
I was checking out Bogs at the garden store. Some of them seem to have a bit of insulation for warmth. The downside is they aren't cheap!

I really like my Tretorn Redo boots. They're unisex and not the prettiest ever, but they're sturdy, practical, have a excellent grip, and keeps my feet warm! They're a little too heavy to wear into town, but perfect for exploring the forest and short hikes.

@sunny: @GreenThumb: I'm going to look into those. Some look really interesting. I didn't realize they had those for adults, I had only seen kid ones before.
