We started with J putting away his toys when he's done.
He picked up on DH cleaning the table after dinner, so he asks for a paper towel and cleans off his tray after meals.

DS is 20 months. He puts his clothes away in the hamper before bath time. He feeds the dogs 2x a day (I scoop and he pours into their dog dishes). He throws his dirty diapers and small pieces of trash away. He "vacuums" and sweeps. He lines up his car toys (his fave at the moment) and collects all his other small toys in a basket some days.
Nothing is rigid, but we like that he enjoys the activities and being involved.

We will start with chores at 3. Right now (we started at 2) we encourage her to help us clean up her toys when she is done. We also have her put her shoes in the shoe basket we keep downstairs when we come inside. We praise any "chore" she may do even something as small as shutting doors behind her when she leaves a room.

Haven't started anything yet, but I think our first one would be to encourage putting away toys when we're done playing with them.
I also have him "give" dads mail to dad. haha

We started with cleaning up toys at 12 months. We do most of it but she gets it. She just gets distracted. I get her undressed for bath in her bedroom and she knew by 14 months that her clothes go in the hamper. She throws away pouches her in the trash, which I consider cleaning up after a meal. I tried to get her to dump her food left on the plate but the plate ends up in the trash too. This weekend, she helped DH take the trash out, by carrying an empty Diet Coke container. She carried it outside all the way to the curb when he moved the cans up there.

@rahlyrah: you haven't started B on chores yet? R cleans the bathroom, living room, and her bedroom. hahaha
I'll start with having her help put away her toys. We try but she prefers to destroy right now rather than clean up.

I don't considered putting away toys or putting your dinner dishes in the sink a chore - that's just part of every day life
We started at age 4
Feeds the dog
Then at 5 we added a few more
Strips bed sheets on Saturday
Picks up sticks from the yard before DH mows the grass
Cleans some of the windows downstairs on Saturday

Just putting dirty clothes in the hamper and cleaning up toys right now. We will probably start more around 4....feeding the dog, etc.

Never thought about putting clothes in the hamper as a chore but she does that always. I guess I am more appreciative of that now. The only real chore is putting away silverware from the dishwasher. I started that at two an monitor. I just made sure to take out any sharp knives from the drawer. I only let her put away the butter knives when she turned 3. It is good for sorting. Also she helps sort the clothes and put her pile in her room. She is a good little helper sometimes.

I'm starting to praise C for putting his toys into bins. He likes to pick up his blocks and throw them back into the container, and today he was picking up his cheerios and putting them back into his bowl. I've been singing the cleanup song and encouraging him to put his bath toys into the bin thing in his tub. I'm not sure if any of this makes an impact, but that's what we've been doing!

L started to pick up his toys (at school) around 13 months. My mom and MIL are shocked b/c his older cousins still don't ever pick up after themselves.
I started having him hand me the silverware from the dishwasher around then, too.

Not chores, but B does the following:
- put away toys, items he gets out
- throws away his own trash
- helps make his food
- walks the dogs
- puts his clothes in hamper
- picks out stories for story time
- help load/unload dishwasher
He started doing these when he turned 1

Wow. I'm feeling very far behind. My 15 month old doesn't do any of the things listed here!!

We try to have LO put away toys when she's done playing with them, take out & put away her shoes when we are going out/coming home and help throw things away in the trash. She's kind of inconsistent and sometimes will run away instead of doing the tasks.
She loves helping me with laundry. She can help transfer between the basket and W/D.
