I guess it depends on the maturity of the child, but a local kid was murdered last year walking home from school for the first time. He was 8. 
So I don't think I will be letting my kids walk home until they're older than that!
When did you start walking home alone from school? I think I might have been 9 or 10... I can't really remember!

I started walking home with my sister when I was 5 or 6.
My kids.. will NEVER walk home alone! Too many crazy people in this world!
Atlanta is one of the largest child trafficking hubs too. SO SCARY!

I started walking home when I was 4 and my brother was 7. Back then it was okay...Now? Not so much. But my neighbourhood is very nice and safe...I think grade 3 will be okay.

Same as Chopsuey. I walked with my sister to and from school around 7 or so. I had a couple of run ins with other kids but nobody every tried to kidnap or lure me into a car or anything of that sort. That said, I'm not taking any chances with my babies. They are NOT walking home from school...period.

My mom can see the elementary school from her house, so I walked home with friends. We're very close to our elementary school, but I still wont let her walk without me until at least middle school.

Probably never. We live in a rural area where walking to/from school wouldn't happen. When I was a kid, we lived 10 miles from our elementary school.

When my grandmother was five years old, living in Baltimore, her mother got her dressed in her nicest clothes one Sunday morning, walked her to the door with her younger sister, and told her to enroll herself in a Sunday School. So she started walking until parishioners at a church brought them in.
It's a different world. I don't think my kids will be walking home from school until they're old enough to defend themselves...but we also live in a rural area, so it's not something that happens much anyway.

Depends how far we are from their school... but I guess this applies to what age would we let them be out walking by themselves... probably age 12?

Oh man, my husband and I aren't on the same page on this one (YET. He'll see when he holds his child in his arms one day.) I say not until high school. He seems to think 12 is OK.

Oye, I hope that my kids will be able to walk to school one day. My cousins were driven to school every day, even though it was only a few blocks and they seemed to think they were entitled to it. I'll have to do some real life polling in my community to see what's the norm...

I walked to and from school when I was 6 or so.
Currently, there is an elementary school super close to our house and I see our neighbor's kids walking to and from school...maybe they are around 7 and 9.
I think around 10 would be ok...

Never!! Plus, school is too far away to be walking. There's all sorts of crazies out there now days.

I am undecided. I was always driven to school, the bus stop was too far and with lots of rowdy kids and the school was too far to walk to.
I am also not sure about the bus...do they even have seatbelts now?
