I hear alot of parents using coconut oil on their little ones. And I'm intrigued. What are the benefits of coconut oil? Why do so many crunchy mamas use it?

There are like hundreds of uses for coconut oil but we use it as diaper rash prevention cream.

I just learned about it's use for diaper rash today, but I have been using coconut oil in my hair for a few years--it's great for keeping my hair & scalp moisturized and helping prevent dandruff. I use it in LO's hair and on her dry skin, as well.

A lot of crunchy moms like it because it's entirely natural and has no chemicals but will clear up diaper rash, moisturizes has very few contraindications and is a good saturated fat to cook with too

I like it because I am trying my best to avoid parabens, phthalates, etc. in my own products and definitely want to avoid them for LO for as long as possible. Skin is very unlikely to have a bad reaction to coconut oil. The texture is really nice and soft and my skin is crazy soft from using it.
A random funny thing is that our dog is strangely good about not eating non-edible things and he just 'knows' that the coconut oil is edible and when I put it on he runs up and licks my belly until I force him to stop, lol.

@JerricaBenton: Funny that you mention your dog. I actually got coconut oil initially for my dog. She has allergies and skin problems. The coconut oil is great for her skin and fur- she's much less red and itchy now. We also let her eat a bit of it as a treat sometimes (I've read that eating it is good for dogs too!). I love using it on my hair and can't wait to use it on baby when baby comes.

It's the only thing that clears up DD's diaper rash! And it's natural. I use it on their cheeks so I don't mind if it goes near the mouth. I'm obsessed with it and DH finally started using it on his skin now too.

I was watching one of those survival shows once and learned that coconut oil is also a natural sunscreen. I thought that was pretty cool.

I'm obsessed with coconut oil... I've used it to treat/prevent diaper rash, to get rid of frizz in my hair, to clean around the house and in cooking/baking. i even put a little in my oatmeal or in smoothies.
Some people use it to lose weight! It's believed in moderation to increase metabolism. Look up lauric acid... It's in coconut oil... Also in human breastmilk... Supposed to have many benefits, including strengthening one's immune system.

We use it as diaper rash cream also! We rub it on her butt when we put on her nighttime diaper because she sleeps so long.

where can you buy it (in person, not online)? do you have to get it at whole foods?

@sorrycharlie: I get the Nutiva brand at Whole Foods... I heard Costco has it now too, but I havent looked there yet. Trader Joes also has a jar for a great price ($7). Amazon & Vitacost are online options too!

I saw it at Costco the last time we were there. We're fixing to go back, so I'll let you know if I find it and where. I've also heard that Walmart has it.

We also use it as a cloth-diaper friendly diaper cream. DD has never had a real diaper rash before, so it must be doing its job. Also, she always smells like a tropical drink when we put it on her. Not bad!

Has anyone bought it from The Body Shop (which I believe is Canadian)?
I just bought coconut body butter, do you ladies think it would have the same benefits or should I just go buy coconut oil?

I love coconut oil! I use it every day as a facial and body moisturizer and it makes my skin so soft! We sometimes feed it to our dogs and I've used it while cooking.
I've read it's important to get organic, extra virgin, unrefined, cold pressed coconut oil because it's in it's most natural state. I order mine it on Amazon.

Costco had it by the cooking oils. It's organic, extra virgin, pure, unrefined, and cold pressed. It was about $15 for 54oz.

@MamaG: I would think so. I heard that's where it was at Walmart .
