Is it family only? Immediate family only? Anyone can come? Case by case basis? Depends on the hospital?

I think the only rule we had was that hands must be washed (duh) and a max of 4 people in the room at the same time. Also, no visitors without a parent present.

Thanks girls! My SIL is going to have her baby soon and there's a good chance it will be in the NICU because she will be 37 weeks. I just wanted to make sure that I'll be allowed to see him/her (she's team green) ASAP!

Depends completely on the hospital. When DD was there it could only be kids older than 5 unless it was a sibling. Only 2 visitors at a time and a parent of the baby must be with them.
they have since gone to all seperate, private rooms so I am not sure if the rules have changed at all now that they have more space.

@artbee: As long as she or her husband is there, and you aren't sick, you shouldn't have any issues. Of course every hospital could be different. Hopefully they will be in an open air crib and not on oxygen ASAP so you can hold him/her much easier.

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: Ok, so I have to concentrate on not getting sick! I would love to hold the baby but if not it won't be the end of the world. She's been through so much I just want everyone to come out of this healthy!

@artbee: You'll be fine, you should be able to meet him,/her pretty soon after birth. My parents and my MIL & FIL were able to go with us at 3 am to meet her in her room.

I jo shadowed at our hospital for 3 months and worked in the L&D Unit so was very close with NICU....Our hospital only allows
-parents
-parents of parents
-siblings 14yrs old & over
and there is even a time limit for siblings....visiting hours are like from 7am-7pm? So, siblings can't some in and do night feedings or anything...
Maybe ours is super strict though because it is like the highest in the state and it's a big-time children's hospital? Dono if that makes any difference in their rules.

@artbee: As soon as I saw this I wondered if your SIL had the baby yet. Our NICU had strict rules, parents and grandparents only, but I think it also depends on the babies that are in there. If there are no high risk/low immune function babies, they tend to be a little more liberal with who they allow in.

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: Ours had the same rules, and no kids were allowed in unless they were a sibling. AND the sibling had to have temp taken by a nurse before going in to make sure they weren't sick.

There's a good chance if the baby is born at 37 weeks there will be no NICU time. 37 weeks is considered full term. Fingers crossed that your SIL baby will not be in the NICU.
Our NICU had strict rules, no fingernail polish and make sure you wash your hands. You can only have 1 visitor at a time and no children under the age of 14.

@prettylizy: Nope, just preparing myself! They're hoping to wait until the end of Oct. I actually have a camping trip planned for that weekend..... which I"ll be happy to delay if I can see my niece or nephew of course. But this is making me think that I might be going on the trip early
@krsmall: I worry because she is pregnant with triplets but she lost two of the babies late in pregnancy so the two babies are still in there, leaving little room for the one baby. They don't know how that is affecting the surviving baby, and it's a teeny tiny baby since it's a triplet. I know that there are chances that it won't have to go in the NICU, but I want to prepare myself for the worst and have a happy surprise if it doesn't.
