I have three friends due with their first baby in the next few months and want to spend £20-25 ($30-40) on a gift for each. What is a good gift(s)? What did you/would you have most liked to receive?
(baby showers are not popular over here, so it's not like I can check out a registry)

A grobag, board books my daughter loved (Dear Zoo or anything by Sandra Boynton), or a few toys like an O-ball or Lamaze knot/tactile toy if I'm going practical...an adorable but impractical outfit like a puffer vest and beanie with ears or a swimsuit with built in nappy and sunglasses if I think they'd like that. Sometimes it's fun to get things you'd never buy for your own child

Usually something indulgent that they wouldn't buy themselves. Every baby is so different it hard to find something useful. My kid was a swaddle/wrap hater and while I totally loved and used all the bath products we received, some babies are so sensitive to product, I wouldn't gift it.

A big box of diapers (if they are using disposables) and we loved our grobag too.

We sent our friends a pack of A&A swaddle blankets and Trumpette socks.

You could do bath or sleep themed items.
Sleep: sleep sheep, jammies, swaddles...
Bath: hooded towel, tub, kneeler, wash cloths, soaps and lotions (shea moisture makes a fragrance free and gluten free soap).
Nose frida.

The only new parents I've gifted recently have been close friends, so I had a good idea of what they would like.
However, the gifts I most appreciated (outside of registry) were food/restaurant certificates so we could order in, and a box full of 'new parent' things; like coffee, candies, snacks for night feedings, a straw cup/water bottle, and things like that.
