I will go outside in my yard but only in range of the monitor and only where I can see my house at all times.

ETA: I had a friend who used to "babysit" for her neighbor's kid by just having the monitor in her house which is next door. That would be a major no from me.

The furthest I'd go was my own patio, with the monitor. I live in the city too and it never once crossed my mind to leave the house to do an errand while she was napping.

As far as the monitor would go, which is probably not far.

I would go as far as the monitor would let me. I just get paranoid out of range. When awake I've run out to the trash or out in the backyard lol. If the monitor reached the store I'd go! I go outside in our yard to work all the time during nap time (monitor reaches).

I probably wouldn't leave our property and like @Mrs D: and @JenGirl: there are a couple of places that I'm ok with leaving him sleeping in the car because I don't consider him unattended if the car is within eye and earshot.

I live a literal stones throw from Starbucks and as tempting as it is to run over during naptime I just can't do it.

Front or back yard seem fine for me. Theoretically I see no problem with running up to a outdoor counter where I could see the car but I would never because people will call the police. I've seen people call the police if people leave their dog in the car (on a cool day, Windows down) to run into the post office so I wouldn't risk it.

I'll go across the street to chat to the neighbours when the girls are sleeping in the house. I am always outside when doing that though, directly across the street from our house, facing the house, and windows are open (we always keep some windows in the house open a crack unless it is frigid outside, in which case I probably wouldn't be standing outside chatting), so I don't worry too much about it.

I regularly sit outside in our fairly large backyard whilst the girls are sleeping (without the monitor as we haven't used that in over a year!), and I have left them in the car on occasion whilst I run inside to pay for petrol, although I hate doing that and try to avoid filling the car up when they're with me (don't get me started on how annoying it is that pay at the pump is not the norm in England!!!).

If the girls are awake, it's a whole different story, at least with my 2 yr old - quick bathroom breaks make me nervous when she's on the loose!

At our house, I feel comfortable being in the yard but probably never further. I did once have to run to our next door neighbor's house to help her when she locked her keys in her car, but that made me uncomfortable since I didn't have a monitor. With a monitor it would have been fine.

With my child in the car, I am fine with walk up stuff with the car in line of sight (so an ATM for example). I want to be okay with running into a gas station or store where I will only be inside for a few minutes, but I worry too much about getting in trouble.

I kind of want to call and talk to a police officer about what exactly they would consider unsafe. I wonder if they would actually give me an answer.

I go to the mailbox occasionally, which is about 5-6 houses down the street. And I've gone across the street to chat with our neighbors very briefly. But that's it.

I wouldn't leave our property. If toddler is napping, I'd be fine with being out in our yard. If toddler is awake, I'll take out the trash or run to the mailbox or go water a few plants and leave him inside for literally a minute. I can't do much longer - he's a disaster! The 4 year old I'd leave inside if I was working in our yard for probably 15 minutes and if he was watching TV or doing some quiet activity.

I take the trash to the trash room down the hall when LO is sleeping. I have talked about leaving the monitor with the family across the hall and going to the gym in the building. But we haven't done it yet.

I live in a very, very secure apartment building. I will walk down the hall to the garbage chute. I won't leave my floor.
I've been tempted since I get packages in the lobby and I get alerts...but I get too scared that the one time Id ride the elevator down 6 floors, there'd be a fire or something and I couldn't get to him.

I was never a fan of helicopter parenting. My rules would probably be 10 minutes max with a baby monitor (including smartphone monitor).

I would go in my yard and that's it. I sometimes get nervous being in the basement when they are on the top floor. It would take me a while to get up there

I'll walk the dog as long as the house is in eye line -- so just across the street or two houses down until she poops. Under 5 minutes and I have a view of the house the whole time.

This is a huge problem for us because we live in a high-rise apartment building on the 20th floor with 2 dogs-- if one of us goes out of town, we need another person to stay over with us so that there's a warm body here to stay w lo while someone takes the dogs out before bedtime. If we felt comfortable leaving lo alone asleep for like 5-10 mins that would make everything way easier....but I just can't do that.
