@mrs. wagon: this! No red ink! Definitely a Korean or just general Asian thing.
@Mrs. Pen: I am convinced the full moon makes my patients crazy!

@gingerbebe: @wonderstruck: i can't sleep when the door is open either!! i didn't know this was a superstitious thing, but i always always tell DH to close the door even when it's just a tiny crack open.
alrighty, you guys will probably think i'm crazy after this but full disclosure... here's my list --
astrology (the sun signs seem to fit most ppl i know with surprising accuracy!), i don't like walking on cracks, i don't like sticking chopsticks straight up and down into anything especially my rice bowl, i don't like writing names in red ink, i don't like walking under ladders or opening umbrellas in the house, and i knock on wood!

I thought of one. Not superstitious though. I won't drive behind log trucks. Ever. I speed past them too!

@HLK208: Oh my god same here! I won't drive behind any open-air cargo like that!
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
@HLK208: My in-laws knew someone who was driving behind a log truck when a log came loose and went through her windshield and it killed her That's ALL I think about now when I see them on the road.

Hmmm I agree with the full moon- my kids at work are especially crazy when it's a full moon.
I always check my back seats before I get in my car, especially if its at night. I heard some crazy story years ago about someone who was hiding in people's cars...freaks me out!

Yes on the bloody marry mirror thing, I have a terrifying story from 3rd grade!
I won't walk under a ladder, or open an umbrella in the house, I throw salt over my left shoulder, and knock on wood.
@Mrs. Pen: It's true So many weird odd things happen on/around a full moon, and the drivers, oy!
@HLK208: I go around all semi's and log trucks when I can. I got hit by a semi when I was younger and now they scare me
coconut / 8430 posts
I didn't think I had that many weird habits but I guess I do!
I hate driving behind trucks with ladders or other open cargo (an empty residential garbage can came flying off one in front of me once on the highway so I guess it's not all superstition)
I touch wood all the time
I won't sweep the floors on Chinese New Years
I can't talk about people dying because I'm afraid it will come true or tempt fate
I don't stick chopsticks in rice and if I see it I immediately remove them
I won't give a clock to anyone as a gift, even if they aren't Asian and won't know what it means for Asians
Gahh I feel like such a crazy person!

Dreams about teeth is supposed to be a bad omen. I'm not particularly superstitious, but I call my mom each and every time it happens (coincidentally there's always bad news with someone's health soon after).

LO sleeps with a handknotted bracelet given to me while pregnant. I was told to keep it underneath her pillow as an infant for luck. I've kept it under the mattress with pieces of strung coral after she had her first night terror. A year has passed and I still keep them both there.

I am Chinese and very superstitious (feng shui, astrology, chinese zodiac + birth time = predetermines pretty much how your life runs out...etc) but too lazy to pay any effort to do anything about it. I would have become a billionaire if I did! haha just kidding
One superstitious thing related to babies: In Chinese zodiac system it was said that every 12 years there will be a big change in your life (ie. 12, 24, 36). I was infertile for 5 years (Started trying since when I was 31? We didn't go for further treatments though other than having my endometrial polyp removed at 32), and somehow I got pregnant naturally when I turned 35 and I delivered at 36 (and of course, HUGE life change). A friend of mine she really struggled with infertility for many many years and she underwent treatment and all, and nothing happened. She was really frustrated and sad and we had this conversation, and I told her you never know, it may happen when you are 36. Next thing you know, she also got pregnant naturally at 35/36. It was so funny, she said the first person she wants to tell was me!! Haha!! OK I am not saying everyone will get preg by 36, but just don't give up hope and have fun around that age

@lovehoneybee: I do the salt over my shoulder thing too I also knock on wood, and don't open umbrellas inside.

Hey all you asians, thanks for reminding me how superstitious I can be!!
I don't give knives or shoes as gifts! Because the recipient will stab you in the back or run away from you.
I also don't stick chopsticks in rice and remove them if I see it! (it's like incense sticks and means someone has died)
Also whenever I dream that someone has died without explanation, I take it to mean they will live a long life. I dreamt my dad died and I was running around freaking out because no one could tell me how he died... they all said "he just died, all of a sudden." I called my mom and she was HAPPY. She immediately asked whether he was sick before he died, and I said no, no one could even tell me what killed him, and she was thrilled... it meant he will live a long and healthy life!

This thread is hilarious!!
When I go through a yellow light I have to kiss my fingers and touch the roof. It was a stupid thing that started in High School, some girlfriends and I did it because it was supposed to mean that a cop wouldn't give you a ticket... Now I cannot go through a yellow light without doing it, even if I try not to I always give in!
bananas / 9227 posts
Dang, so I guess I'm a lot more superstitious than I thought because I also don't give anyone shoes or sharp objects as gifts. With shoes, I was taught you're supposed to give back a penny or the person will 'walk all over you'.
I knock on wood, I cringe at chopsticks in rice, don't write anyone's name in red, my front door is painted an auspicious color (based on the direction it's facing), and DD's name is as close to 'lucky' as I can get based on letter count, which likely isn't even accurate. Yeh ... lol.

@HLK208: Isn't that a scene from Final Destination 2 (or 3?)? I always think about it when I drive behind log trucks too.

I just thought of another one, though maybe it's not quite a superstition and just me being weird. I won't sleep with my feet under the covers, and I keep a pair of shoes right by the bed. I also keep my purse there, too. I guess my belief is that if something happened and I needed to get out of bed and LEAVE RIGHT NOW I'd be ready. Not totally far fetched, since that exact thing happened to me years ago when there was a fire at a hotel I was staying in, and I was so freaked out that I ran outta there with no shoes or any of my important documents, and then they all burned in the fire

@swurlygurl: OMG holy crap NO! I would probably scream and have to move away and turn so I'm not looking at it. I'm on my phone right now and dropped it and yelped at the photo you posted...so imagine in real life. It wouldn't be pretty. If by some rare chance I did someday have an encounter with a shark, I would probably die of a heart attack before it even got a chance to touch me!
GOLD / coconut / 8266 posts
@swurlygurl: heck no!! I wouldn't even go into the room with the blue whale hanging from the ceiling at the Museum of Natural History in NYC for years. Great white shark bus? No way.

@Mrs. Pen: The full moon thing is ABSOLUTELY true. We see a marked uptick in psych/rehab placements in the hospital right before/after the full moon.
Add me to the list of people who can't be near a mirror in the dark. And if I wake up at 3am, I freak out...especially if I wake up because I need to go get a glass of water. All I can picture is The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I swear my pulse quickens and I have a hard time breathing.

I don't put my purse on the floor, because it means you'll lose money.

I will absolutely never-ever celebrate birthdays ahead of time. I am convinced it is tempting fate and is bad luck. This was not passed down from anyone, just my crazy mind making things up.

@wonderstruck: Oh I can't either! If the closet doors are open I have to close them too!
@MediaNaranja: I do something similar! I can't sleep all wadded up in clothes, so when I take my shirt off before bed I always leave it laid out face down, easy to grab off the dresser so if I have to run out of my house in the middle of the night i'm not naked hahahaha.
I can't go to bed with out two pillows on the center couch cushion. So weird but if I get up to feed LO really early in the AM and my pillows aren't there to prop my elbow up with I get all flustered. Idk if that counts.
I never close a knife I didn't open.
Can someone explain the chopsticks in the rice thing to me? Never used chopsticks before so I don't understand

@Mae: oh man, I am so like this. My logical brain knows better, but I've had two experiences that don't care what logic says.
When I was 19, I was talking to someone at work about how I'd never lost anyone close to me. The next day, my cousin died in a helicopter crash. Last year, I was relating that story to my best friend as I told her that even though I knew it wasn't logical, it still freaked me out. The next day, my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

@prettylizy: I do the same thing, always turning on and off lights in the path to my bedroom door at night so that I don't have to be in the dark. But when I'm sleeping I need the room to be as close to pitch black as possible..
When I was living in my parents' apartment I couldn't have my closet door open even a crack at night, and I had to get my parents to re-hang the doors because they had somehow shifted so that even when closed there was a crack of a couple inches. I also had a thing where if I was going through any door in the building but not in our apartment yet I would have to be either through the next door or touching metal when the previous door closed. It was only a real issue in that building, but even now I tend to feel better if I'm touching metal when the elevator doors close at our current place.

@MrsTiz: As Chinese (not sure if it is universal on all asian cultures), at someone's funeral, or when you go to your ancestors' tombstone, they put incense, bowl(s) of white rice with a pair of chopsticks stuck straight on top of it, roast meat and what not, and some liquor in small cups in front of the ancestor's picture/ ceremony table /tomb stone. You put it all out there for a period of time when you do other stuff (such as burning "fake paper money"). So your ancestor gets to "eat" the meal and receive the "money" from you. Therefore, chopsticks stuck on top of a bowl of rice is a pretty bad symbol.

I'm not superstitious at all. I don't even believe in "jinxing" yourself (like when you say "Ah what a beautiful day!" apparently you're dooming it to rain). Astrology readings and Chinese gender charts are just for fun.

@Mae: ME TOO!!! When I was in college id never lie about an illness bc I felt like it would be my fault if something did end up happening!!!
I believe that having decorations w/elephants w/o their trunks facing the sky that it's bad luck. A friend of mine got a tattoo w/the trunk facing downward and I cringed!!
