I don't mean used by your friends/family.. I'm talking consignment stores, thrift shops, Craigslist, etc.
Why do you pass on those items?
From car seats, cribs, clothes, bedding, pumps, maternity clothes, bottles, etc.. be specific!

Car seats, for safety reasons. The crib, but that's just because it's a tradition to get a gifted crib...had we not, we would buy that used. That's really about it...

Oh good question-- I'm subscribing.
I'm wary of anything soft, because of bed bug concerns (aside from clothes that could be washed on hot and are pretty unlikely to have a problem).
I also wouldn't buy a car seat used, for obvious reasons, though I do hope to get either my sister's or my friend's and would pay them, but I know they haven't been in an accident.

I wouldn't buy soft/cloth stuff that can't be washed, and no on car seats. Absolutely no on a pump as well, even with new tubing.

I agree with the carseat. Not because of the expiration because you can check that before you buy, but because you never know if that seat has been in a major accident and may have some damage that you can't see.

The only things I felt comfortable buying used were hard, plastic toys (like the leapfrog table) that could easily be washed and cleaned, and books.

Car seat, crib mattress, and crib--I don't like the idea of someone else's child slobbering all over/biting the crib. I am also a germophobe, though!

We did get a second hand carseat because we literally needed it for a 15 minute taxi ride home from the hospital and that was it since we don't have a car, I wouldn't buy a breastfeeding pillow or pump used, DH wouldn"t buy cloth diapers used which upsets me as they're sooo much cheaper!

@travelgirl1: I never thought about babies in cities where the parents don't drive--what are the laws about baby (not a newborn) in taxi cabs? Or can/do you take public transport most places?

My first thought was car seat. Also cloth diapers..dunno why but I can't bring myself to do it.

Car seat, crib, crib mattress, pump, bottles, maternity underwear (like bras), toys that can only be spot washed instead of deep cleaned.
Car seat because I like knowing that nothing has happened to that car seat unless its happened in my car; crib because I like the new convertible 4-in-1 cribs that they have, no worries about drop down, etc; crib mattress because then I don't have to guess how old it is or worry about who might have been sleeping on it/what kind of living conditions of the house/etc; and pump just because, let's face it, even after someone's thoroughly cleaned is, someone elses breasts and their breast milk has been in there. Ew.
I added bottles because some of them, like the Dr. Browns, I feel like I would have to replace a few components first before I felt comfortable using it so I would just go ahead and get them new.

I wouldn't buy a used car seat, pump, or mattress. I'd also be hesitant about bottles.

i wouldn't buy used carseats, breast pump without a closed system, a mattress (i would also get a new mattress for subsequent children), stuffed animals, gear that can't have the fabric removed to wash, cloth diapers with stains (i know they'd be fine, that's just my own hangup!), pacifiers, sophie the giraffe/ other teething type toys or toys that are obviously chewed, i would buy used glass bottles- but i'd replace the nipples because they deteriorate and the openings tend to widen with time.

I bought a used pump (from a friend) and don't really understand the concern. I bought all new tubing and parts so basically all that is used is the motor and that never touched milk.

Carseat, mattress, bibs, bottles, any fabric toys, stuffed animals...

@eeh: same here! And someone on HB actually posted a video while back on how to clean your medela pump to 'sterilize' it.

Car seat, mattress, stroller ... anything too big to fully throw into the washing machine. Bottles and sippy cups, teethers because they're so cheap I'd rather get them new so I know the brand and know they haven't been dipped in some weird solution.

car seats, mattress, breast pump, bottles (only because I'm weird about that stuff), definitely wouldn't accept nipples, shoes unless in pristine condition.

Car seat for sure as you never know they history, mattress/crib, teething toys, and nipples.
