I'm visiting my family in Los Angeles in 2 weeks and I need to get new car seats since my kids have outgrown the ones my parents have.
They are 6 and 8 and around 40 lbs.

Following, I am thinking of buying a Graco affix when my daughter turns 6.

My almost 7 year old/50 pounder is still in a 5 point harness. He is okay in a high backed belted booster for short periods of time, but he lacks the ability to sit properly the entire time and leave the belt alone.

At 6 and 8 they would be safe to use a booster IF they have the maturity/ability to sit properly the whole time - no bending over, messing with the belt, etc. Though many boosters have a 40 pound minimum so you would need to watch that.
Also check the state law, some states have a 40 pound minimum for booster usage. Since you said around 40 I took they to mean it may be under.

Mine is around 40 pounds but I hesitate putting her in the booster bc I would rather her be in the higher end of weight for those than barely meeting it. She's in a 5 point harness but those can be more pricier esp if it's only for traveling.
Last year when we went to Korea, I didn't want to drag the heavier car seat so we purchase the booster with high back. It's not as expensive, it's lighter, and she can def sit in it better than the reg booster without like flopping over.

Charlie is 47 lbs and Olive is 37 lbs. I don't want to go with just a booster, but a car seat that can convert to a backless booster. I know the 5 point harness seats my parents have now are way too small for Charlie at almost 8. They'd only be using it once every year so I don't want to spend a lot, but I still want to get a good comfortable one. Also Olive is excellent at sitting still.

@bhbee: the affix looks good for my kids and a good price point!

@Mrs. Bee: the affix is a nice booster with a 30 pound minimum in high back mode. It also has lower anchors so you can hook those up instead of buckling the seat in the car when your kids get out. It also goes by the name turbobooster. It can be wide and does not allow any overhang as an FYI. You could also look at the evenflo big kid which is a bit more narrow.
If you want a combination seat (a harness seat that transitions to a booster) you could look at the harmony defender, graco tranzitions, or the Cosco finale for some low cost options with decent limits.

We have the graco tranzitions for my 6 year old. I like it because it is narrow (fits 3 across).

@Mrs. Bee: Not a car seat, but perhaps the carseat vest? We picked this up on your recommendation, and it's been amazing!

@Beehive: We love our carsest vest too! LO is starting to not like it as much because she likes to look out the window and see the world.

@Mrs. Bee: we have the Diono Monterey, which converts to a backless booster. Our backup boosters for the 2nd car are the Evenflo Maestro, which can convert from 5-point harness to belted.

@Beehive: I loved them too! but olive gets crazy car sick so it helps for her to sit higher and be able to see the horizon, so i think a car seat would be better for her right now!

@Mrs. Bee: We have the Graco Tranzitions for my four-year-old and I love it so much that I can't wait to buy one for my youngest when she turns two. It was really affordable, $95 at Walmart and it should be the last carseat I buy her (provided there are no accidents). It converts to a belt-positioning and backless booster, plus it is narrow and lightweight.

@Mrs. Bee: we used the Affix for my DS and he now uses it as a backless booster - no problems with it at all

@Mrs. Bee: I have that seat for my son in my dad's car. I like it because you can use LATCH to keep it in position when the child isn't using it (rather than having to remember to belt it).
I would really consider a 5 point harness, though. I feel that kids under a certain weight need to be in a harness....have you looked at the car seat laws in CA for both weight and age?
