DH is planning on painting his office a dark navy when the basement is finished. It will have white trim and a light greyish carpet (we think, haven't finalized that). He said that he wants it dark. He will have a big sliding glass door and a window to let in some light.

Our whole house is in Bejamin Moore Sterling (living areas/bathrooms). Bedrooms are in a slightly darker gray, I forget the name. Basement is in a super light yellow.

@winniebee: Hmm so the gold hue is much more noticeable than it seems to me... And can you paint over the navy desktop or put some kinda contact paper over it?

It is an option to have the desk surface refinished? Sanded and stained to match the rest of the desk maybe? That feels like a way to make the desk more neutral and take out the blue factor.

Actually the more I look at it, I have to wonder if the blue is more like a laminate. I was originally thinking painted blue, but that would get scratched pretty easily. Still I think I'd pursue trying to change the surface to be more neutral and then attack the walls.

@winniebee: Okay, focus on paint. Of the three you have I like the one on the right.

With the blue top, painting the walls blue too will make a big blue statement. I'd head back to tan edging closer to maize. Somewhere in between the dark yellow/tan in the carpet and the ivory base color.
The middle color in the latest pic is closest but is too close to the trim color.

Love your french doors! Google image Benjamin Moore Old Prairie or White Down. They are kind of a tannish gray if that makes sense.

@winniebee: Where is your rug from?

My office is a pale yellow that looks really close to the middle one in the last pic, with white trim. I would recommend going yellow! I've got a bright blue frame on a piece of art that looks like it's about the same color as your desktop, and it looks great against the walls. When I get around to doing a rug, it will probably have some bright or navy blue in it, too. My floors and desk are wood and all the bookshelves are painted white, and there is a lot of natural light, so it's pretty similar to your room.

My home office and our whole apartment are bright white. I love it, but I know most people don't like white walls. I have 3 framed photos hanging right next to my desk to add visual interest.

Our current office is BM Upper West Side. It's a medium tan/brown but I don't know that it would have the undertones you are looking for.

Our last house was SW Naturel. That might go.

That desk...is the top Formica? I wonder if you could replace it... Or if it just isn't worth it?

We recently used Valspar Woodlawn Sterling Blue and I LOVE it! It may work. It is a really subtle blue/gray color depending on how much light the room gets.

@winniebee: if you wanted to cover the top of the desk they make all kinds of cool contact paper these days!
