@winniebee: keep in mind a cluttered desk is a sign of a genius and as a bonus it hides ugly laminate.
I think laminate is rather inexpensive to replace once you get around to it. Maybe check it out at home depot or wherever. I'm pretty sure they carry more neutral stuff in stock. Or if you want wood, you could get cheap butcher block from Ikea and try to stain to match the rest of the desk (or even paint it, maybe?)

@skipra: then I must be a genius!!! Or have no qualms about hiding the bizarre desk. The rest of our house is perfection. The office....not sure what they were thinking with that laminate!

Our office is BM La Paloma Gray and I really like it. It's pretty light, though. I'm into light and airy colors.

Also, my old place was painted BM stingray which is a beige type color. Might be a good option.
