I think my 14 month old has lost her mind. She only had about 7 hours of sleep last night (broken), would not let me put her down, is refusing to nap today, and is SO SO SO cranky. She's fine one minute, and then the next minute she is completely losing her mind. I'm totally overwhelmed now.
What could be wrong? What can I do?

So weird, my almost 7 mo is the same way today. He had his worst night EVER last night and just now went down for his first nap. He's uninterested in nursing (which is crazy weird). I'm thinking either teeth or cold, but I have no idea really. HUGS! We'll get through it!

She only had 3 teeth, so kids not molars. She's just gone nuts, and I don't know what to do!!! If I don't get rest tonight it's going to be ugly.

@Pumpkin Pie: my DD never had a fever with any of her ear infections, and she had so many she ended up with tubes. I'd head to the doctor if I were you, for peace of mind if nothing else.

For us, crazy meant either teeth or ear infections. It was/is brutal. Would you be amenable to giving Motrin to see if it helps?

I have her motrin last night and I don't think it really helped. I don't think she has an ear infection. But from the signs, it looks like teething. I just didn't think they got THIS crazy when teething. The day before, she seemed totally fine, and then starting yesterday, she just turned insane

Sleep really sucked for us around 14 months. It's when LO started walking though, so I blamed it on that. I didn't expect toddler sleep to suck more than baby sleep

The night my LO turned 14 months old he had the worst night of sleep. We are not sure what caused it but luckily he was fine the rest of the week. Then a week later he had another bad night that - we thought it was molars but it was his second round of HFM.

Can she just need throwing a tantrum? Grandma is here and thinks it's a tantrum, and LO should be disciplined.

@Pumpkin Pie: personally, I don't believe sleep issues need disciplinary measures. She could be just overtired, could be getting molars, could be coming down with something. Plus, she's 14 months old and a baby...what kind of discipline is Grandma suggesting?

@Anagram: is not just sleep issues. She is super duper cranky, and throwing tantrums. Grandma thinks instead of picking her up all the time, we just need to leave her crying until she cannons down.

Teething, learning new skills, cognitive leap?? it's so tough when our LOs go through rough patches!!! 18 months was my "I don't know how I can do this!" stage, but it really does get better!!!

My daughter did this a lot from 8 - 14 mo and it always ended up being teething. Hang in there! Hopefully whatever it is reveals itself soon.

The behavior today could be from the lack of sleep last night. And the lack of sleep could be teething or sickness. Both of which might be bothering her today as well.

There's a big developmental leap around now that lasts for a few weeks. Wonder Weeks calls it "Systems" where you kid learns sequences of events that go together. My kid had a few nights of fighting going to bed (lots of crying), some MOTN wake ups, and 2 weeks of early morning wake ups. At the same time as molars. Its hard because they are mobile and can voice their opinions (through crankiness and tantrums), so it seems like a much more "vocal" leap. But its also being accompanied by a lot of sudden development that is tangible. All of the sudden my son is putting toys and snacks INTO containers instead of just throwing them everywhere, he understands things go together, he tries to put lids on containers, he's trying to open cabinets and dig through things more, etc. He's also suddenly more vocal (although not really verbal) and trying really hard to express himself. Hang in there. Mine is turning 15 months on Dec. 6th.

@Pumpkin Pie: I am kind of fanatical about this but LO has had multiple ear infections with zero symptoms other than serious crankiness. It's been the case for several friends too. It won't hurt to go get her checked out.

For the record, ear infections aren't always accompanied by fevers. Trust your mommy instincts! If you touch her ear and she reacts I would take her in.

Honestly, I think nothing may be wrong. Babies/toddlers have so much going on in their minds and bodies, she just might be grumpy.
Others have said ear infections. Could be that too. My boys never get fevers with ear infections.

@Pumpkin Pie: For the record, DS woke up at 1030pm, stayed up for 3 hours, slept fitfully, and then woke up for the day before 7am. No fever, just awake and extra screechy.

I'm not convinced that she has an ear infection. It doesn't seem like it's so much pain that its an ear infection. I'm guessing teething or developmental leap. But I need it to end soon! We're are also traveling for Christmas when she'll be 15 months. I can already see it's not going to be fun.

@Pumpkin Pie: I'm also going to add that it might be an ear infection. With H's last one, she exhibited no symptoms other than excessive crankiness all day. Then she woke up at 10:45 with a fever of nearly 104F. Turns out her right ear was infected to the point that her ear drum was bulging and we had no idea until she spiked the fever.
Also, it could be teeth. Those molars take FOR. EV. ER. to come in. H has been working on hers for the last two months and we still have one tooth that has yet to erupt.

Nothing, he was just awake. I rocked him in a dark room, sang to him, set him down to self settle - he was just wide awake the whole time and would get upset because he couldn't fall asleep. When we turned the lights on to check his diaper he was all smiles and giggles because he was awake and wanted to play. We just laid with him in a dark room until he actually dozed off and then transferred. He cried because he woke up but he was sleepy enough to settle eventually and then slept fitfully. I guess there isn't much you can do if they are just awake. But of course he is crankier than usual and very screechy. Breakfast option 1 was fully refused and option 2 went over okay until he started flinging it on the ground when he was done instead of saying all done in baby sign.

@Pumpkin Pie: That's awful advice and I really hope you don't follow it. If anything, do the opposite. Extra hugs, more attention, etc. The tantrums are likely due to being overly tired since she's not sleeping well. 14 months old is way too young to understand discipline, and none of their behavior at that age is intentional, even the tantrums, so all Grandma's advice will teach your daughter is that she's being ignored and unloved. Something is happening - it could be teething (if she only has 3 teeth, she could be getting a whole batch all at once), it could be a looming sickness, it could be a developmental leap. Just keep watching her and doing the best you can to help her cope. This is incredibly stressful on her - she has no idea how to cope with physical changes and her emotions are completely foreign to her - and she needs extra love and attention, not less. I hope it resolves soon, whatever it is.

My 14mo had a night like this last week - I chalked it up to a bad dream bc even though we have never co-slept and he's been sleep-trained/consistently STTN for ages now, but he randomly woke up in the MOTN and freaked when I tried to put him back in his crib. He had a runny nose but no congestion/coughing, fever, etc., and no signs of molars. He ended up going back to sleep in our bed, but not before he'd been awake for 1.5 hours His napping has been a little erratic, too.
Anyway, I'm now pretty sure it's related to a developmental leap (he just finished that wonder week - principles - on Saturday) because in the last week or so he has had a crazy language explosion - like, picking up a new word or two almost daily. I think his mind is just going a mile a minute and although he's normally really great about self-soothing and going back to sleep easily, it's hard for him to do that right now. I liken it to when I have something major going on at work that I can't stop thinking about - I have a tough time sleeping then, too! We've also noticed that he's been way more interested in books & reading than he usually is, so we're taking any opportunity to read with him and help him work on his language while he's awake so he can "shut off" more otherwise.

Thanks for all the support/advice. Now that we have the ear infection ruled out. I guess its just teething or development? We'll just have to ride it out.
