I just got estimates for a gazillion dollars. Holy moly. It's a two tiered cake for 20ppl, no fondant, a ruffle sort of design. I was not aware that they could be crazy $$$! A sheet cake from Costco is looking good right now, lol. ETA: Added a poll!

I got cupcakes for $20
ETA: I forgot! I also got two round cakes at the grocery store with just plain white icing for $10 each. I decorated them with sprinkles myself.

@emg86: We served a sheet cake from Costco. Everyone LOVED it. Surprised it was from Costco. It is huge and $17.99. Can't be that.
Plus I hate fondant and most bakery cakes have it these days.
I made R's smash cake.

Less than 10 at the grocery store. We only had family over!
Some of my friends spent $300+ for tiered cakes!

About $175. I had to have it, there was no talking me out of it.
eta: two tiers, fondant covered, with hand rolled caterpillar design and fruit cut outs.

@Smurfette: This is kind of what I'm thinking may be what happens! I thought it would be way cheaper cause I asked for no fondant.

I had specialty cakes made both times.
$297 including tax per cake!
They both looked wonderful though.

$80 but it was still just a sheet cake (personalized with his theme) from a baker. His smash cake came free with it.

@looch: Ok, you've made me feel better, lol! A part of me knows it's a little nuts and another part of me also knows that the years that I get to pick stuff for her party are limited and she won't have a crazy cake every year.

I made mine...so it was just a cost of materials. It's was a black and white zebra/marbled cake with fondant...made to look like a drum (Rock star bday theme). I also made 50 cupcakes and their decorations. I was pretty proud of them

I spend $8.99 on his individual cake and then $20 on cupcakes. Got both from Safeway and they were absolutely delicious.

@Smurfette: I gained 5lbs eating leftovers.

@emg86: yeah, if that's what it comes to, I know it's ridic when you think that you can buy the ingredients for less than $15, but it was so worth it for me to not have to think about/DIY it.
We've done homemade cakes for the subsequent birthdays, lol.

Haha, I plan to make both the cupcakes and smash cake, so like 10$? If we had the $$ though, you bet your booty I'd spend upwards of 100$ for a 1st bday cake!
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
okay just kidding. I looked back at my cake receipts and DD's cost $198. DS' was $297! inflation! DS' was bigger though and DD's wasn't covered in fondant!

She got a $10 smash cake from Publix with ruffles and for her party we did cupcakes from a local shop that was about $30-40.

My teenage sister made it.. so it was free
I also spent $10 on a smash cake.
I don't think I'd ever spend more than $40 for a cake for my child. ..or well, DH wouldn't let that happen! lol

We spent $80ish on the smash cake, I think the cake itself was 30ish dollar, but the fondant piece on top (we got Llama Llama customized) was $50.00. It was really cute though.
We bought a secondary cake for guest to eat and that was $85.00, so we spent almost $200 on both cakes.

I baked it myself. It wasn't the prettiest thing but I want to bake all their cakes. Until they request store bought ones.

Here are the few pics I have.
It was my first time using fondant and my family literally had to make me stop obsessing about making it "perfect" before I gave myself a nervous breakdown. Lol I think it turned out cute

Don't knock Costco sheet cake! It's freaking DELICIOUS. We served it at our wedding!!!
I made cupcakes and E's bday cake myself.
But I would totally buy a cake for $200 if i wasn't an anal crazy lady who loved to bake and make my own goodies all pretty. I've even taken decorating classes, so that's my justification

I actually made the cake - it was a three layer yellow cake with vanilla buttercream. But I did buy a cake for her baptism - single tier, fondant cake for about $90 or so.

2 layer cake with buttercream icing and fondant detail for 25 people - $68.
Not a pic of the exact cake, but the example she's using

Made her smash cake and got cupcakes from Costco for $30. Everyone loved them!! So delicious.

I am making his smash cake- and ordered a Costco cake for the guests (And I have an on the side cupcake business- but I didn't want to be stressing out like a crazy person.... I wanted to enjoy his party!!)

We had big fancy parties for their 1st birthdays and we had 2 tiered fondant covered cakes for both to serve 30-40 people. I think we paid about $250-$300 per cake. I know, it's a lot. But I DIYed a lot of stuff for both parties and cake, while being very important, is an area I have never ventured into, so I paid the pros. I got Wagon Jr.'s cake from my favorite bakery and LMW's cake from the bakery that made our wedding cake.
Other birthday cakes? about $40 for WJ's 2nd birthday cake from that same favorite bakery, and a grocery store cake that was included in the price of his playspace birthday party for his 3rd and 4th I will probably make their birthday cakes from here on out, unless we have the party at a space that includes the cake.

I used trader joes cake mix and store bought frosting. So like $10 max!

We did sheet cake from Costco for guests and I made his smash cake. One tip for the Costco cake is to ask for no borders. It looks so much better without the swirls they put on the outside!
