Im scheduled for Friday and it just occurred to me this could wipe out the money we had set aside for delivery later this year. We have a $2200 deductible so I'm guessing that's the minimum we'll owe with anesthesia etc? Coinsurance is 20% so that could add up too.
It also sucked I had to pay my copay today for the visit to find out pregnancy was over (regular prenatal is covered). I hate insurance.

Im so sorry. Medical care is really tough. Yes I would assume you'll probably hit your deductible. I'm not sure the total cost though.

Ugh I'm sorry, it's brutal. Mine was around $1200 OOP...we have a super high deductible plan. I'm not sure what the total was before insurance.

ETA: Now I'm second guessing myself....maybe that was just the anesthesia? I can't remember, it was a few years ago. I just know it wasn't cheap!

I was scared about this too but it turned out that mine was fully covered. I think we have a very good plan though. My L&D and all pre-natal visits were also fully covered. My post-natal and post-loss visits had a co-pay.

@bhbee: I had surgery for an ectopic vs a D&C, but my anesthesia was $1,200. The surgery, pathology, and doctor's fee was an additional $23,000.
I paid $1,354 of that amount.

We used to have an even higher deductible ... we've been through a ton of medical expenses the last few years and this was the first year where the big expense was going to be for something good. Sigh ... at least we have the money set aside vs having to make payments and can get it done.

@bhbee: I was also able to have it done at an outpatient surgery center instead of the hospital which I think is a bit cheaper.

$4500. My vaginal (unmediated) birth was $3500 at the same hospital, including all prenatal care. It made no sense to me. This was post insurance, but a high deductible plan

Before insurance it was 12k. I think we paid about 1.5k after insurance.

I had a D&E because I was 23 weeks along. I ended up paying 3,000 (which is our max out of pocket for the year). When I gave birth via c section and stayed in the hospital for 2 nights it only cost me 2700 out of pocket. I dont undrstand how a c section is cheaper, but it is what it is.

I am so sorry. I hated paying every expense associated with my miscarriage. It cost more than my first childbirth (unmedicated) with all prenatal care. Its not fair and if you're angry about it, you're not alone.

If costs are prohibitive for you (or anyone else who needs miscarriage management) Planned Parenthood and most other abortion providers do see people for D&Cs (or medical management with misoprostol). The total out-of-pocket cost at most clinics is between $300-$600 without insurance (potentially much less with). Clinics don't usually offer general anesthesia, but many offer some form of sedation or twilight.

@Pollywog: @Coffee-lover: One of my best friends had the same experience, her D&C cost her more out of pocket than the birth of her daughter. That's just crazy.

I don't remember what the actual total bill was, but it maxed out my deductible for the year - which is $2500.
I had the same experience as jessymess and feel the same way. The whole thing STILL bothers me over a year later.

A little over $5000, which was our out of pocket max that year, and like pp's said, I spent more on it than my actual eventual live birth. It SUCKED. On the bright side, I did appreciate being knocked out by the anesthesiologist so I have no memory of anything. And I got a pair of rubbery-bottomed hospital socks that I still wear.

I don't think we paid anything for my first one. Or maybe my husband paid the bill and didn't tell me? But it was considered an "emergency" (I was bleeding heavily after delivering naturally for a stillbirth) so I think my insurance covered it as if it was an emergency visit.
My second was about $600. We're not sure if that was a mistake (I was charged very similar amounts, around $300, by both the hospital and the doctor) but I never had the energy to fight it.

Wow, the costs are so high.
I had 2 D&Cs for both miscarriages (one @10 weeks the other @13 weeks). They were covered under my insurance. I only had to pay a $200 hospital fee.
