Thanks to having two sets of grandparents my lo has a ton of toys. Her first birthday is coming up, and I'm dreading the amount of toys she'll get. She doesn't even need any clothes, so I'm not quite sure what to tell people if they ask what she needs. I guess I could always ask for books.

I know that one of my friends recently had her daughter's first bday and just kind of spread the word that 529 contributions would be most appreciated. Im not sure what to think about that because I think asking for cash is tacky, but at the same time an investment in your child's future is much more important than more toys.

@MamaMoose: that's not a bad idea. I never tell people what I want unless they ask. I figure if they're asking they really want to know and want to get something useful, and money for lo's future is the most useful gift.

I don't have a little one yet, but I got my friend's little boy a birthday plate that I did with his name on it. I painted a birthday cake on it so he can use it each year on his birthday.

We got a ton of clothes, some toys, and zero books. We also got a bit of cash and gift cards and those were my favorite gifts because I was able to use it for things LO actually needs and the cash was put in his bank account.

I think we got cash and clothes, some little toys, but mostly things that were easy to transport in a suitcase. I hate it when people ask what they can get and then go off in some other direction...I love gifts, don't get me wrong, but I love a fat bank account even more.

We get a mix of everything. Toys, clothes, books, cash. It was the same for her 2nd bday. I don't have big birthday parties to prevent gift overload. If you only invite the VIPs, you'll get better gifts anyway because those are the people that know you the best.

I like the idea of 529 contributions or even EE bonds. We really don't need any clothes, toys, or books. Maybe I should ask for food, this kid eats a ton!

Toys, clothes, books, and cash. All were welcomed gifts. I did create a wishlist on Amazon so that people had an idea of the toys and books that he would like. Because of the wishlist, my LO received many books. He loves them!

A friend's parents bought her little one a set of toddler instruments and music classes. They wanted something for the LO to open but my friend was opposed to more "stuff" this seemed to work well.
A zoo membership or likewise could work well too if you guys would enjoy that.

We asked for donations to our local food bank in lieu of gifts! I didn't want any more toys taking over the rest of my house

We got a mix of money for college fund, toys, and books. Our personal gift to our son was a zoo membership. All of the gifts my son did receive were straight off of the amazon wish list I keep for him so they were all items that we didn't mind owning.

I like to give books for birthday's, you can never go wrong building up the library!

We mainly just celebrated with family, so LO ended up with some smaller gifts of toys and clothes, but we tried to direct most of the family (who wanted to give bigger gifts) towards specific things. Some of the things we got included swim lessons at the local JCC, a convertible tricycle thing (where there's a handle for a parent to push the trike when LO is too young to figure out the pedals), and a sand and water table. I wish we'd asked for shoes. LO only has one decent pair of shoes.

We're in the midst of planning LO's first birthday and my brother recently asked what LO would want and I drew a blank. I will gratefully accept anything. When my friend had her son's first birthday, she just had on the invitation, "Please, no stuffed animals. PLEASE, I'm begging you." I thought it was funny.

No LO here yet, but for 1st bday we usually gift a convertible tricycle since everyone seems to have kids during warmer weather so it works out well.

Our LO was born a week before Christmas so I'm anticipating a ton of presents around the holidays this year (her first birthday). My husband and I have already talked about it and we decided that we are going to start teaching her about charitable giving very early - if she gets a ton of toys, we'll keep a couple and the rest will go (unopened) to Toys for Tots.
